You simply stared at the man before you. He looked so similar to Rengoku, same hair, eyes, eyebrows and build. However, he gave off such an awful aura. The aura of someone who was hurting, and angry at the world for their pain.

"Why are you here?" The man asked Kyojuro rudely. His voice was gruff and dark, and now that you looked closer you could see a bottle in his hands. Your father didn't seem fazed by his rudeness at all.

"Hello to you too, father! How have you been holding up?" Kyojuro smiled. The older man didn't seem very impressed.

"You need to leave. I already have your damn brother here pestering me." The man continued. You pouted, but ultimately didn't approach with the swear jar. This man was too intimidating and he hadn't even noticed you yet.

"Well, father, as for why I'm here. I have somebody I would like for you to meet!" Kyojuro beamed. The older man sighed in annoyance, shaking his head.

"I don't care about who you want me to meet. Get out of my house." He glowered. Kyojuro didn't seem to pay any attention to his father's demand, as he stepped back so you could be better seen. Your eyes were wide in confused innocence as you stared up at the irritated man. He simply glared down at you, obviously not very impressed.

"Who's brat is this?" He asked. Kyojuro planted a hand gently onto your head.

"I can assure you, father, that (Y/N) here is no brat! She is the nicest little girl you could ever meet!" Kyojuro said fondly.

"Who's is she? She's too old to be yours." Rengoku's father asked again.

"She is my daughter though, father! I adopted her!" Kyojuro gave you a supportive smile.

"You're not mature enough to have a child, Kyojuro. You're too naive, thinking that being a Hashira is worth anything." The man rolled his eyes, before looking back at you.

"And as for you." He began.

"You aren't part of this family. Just because Kyojuro wants you around, doesn't mean that I do." The man's words were harsh and mean. However, over time, you had learned not to take things to heart. Plus, you could see pain in his eyes; he was hurting.

"Now, get out of this damn house." The man sneered. The word 'damn' caught your attention again. This time, though, you unclipped the jar from your belt. The label, 'Swear Jar' caught the older man's attention. Kyojuro felt himself die a bit on the inside.

"Swear Jar." You said blankly. Shinjuro simply stared at you in bewilderment, as did Senjuro, who was hiding behind the corner.

"What exactly are you teaching this brat, Kyojuro? That you have to pay to speak freely?" He growled angrily. You stared back at Shinjuro, before speaking again.

"Bad words..." You began.

"Are bad! And you shouldn't say them, because they hurt people's feelings!" You scolded the older man, before calmly turning around and walking away with your swear jar still in your hands.

Kyojuro was bewildered.

Senjuro was horrified.

And Shinjuro was seething.

"You brat! Who do you think you are?!" Shinjuro yelled out as you walked away.

"Your granddaughter! Whether you like it or not!" You respond as you walked out the door, into the night air. Kyojuro wondered where in the world you had gotten all that sass from. However, seeing you stand up to his father was something that not only surprised him, but made him happy. Perhaps this was the push Shinjuro needed to realize he was being a royal pain in EVERYONE'S ass and start being decent towards others again.

"What the hell are you teaching that little shit, Kyojuro?!" Shinjuro screamed out. Faintly, your voice was heard yelling 'THAT'S TWO DOLLARS, GRANDPA!' from outside. Shinjuro could feel his teeth grinding in anger, as he then pointed at the door.

"Get. Out." Shinjuro demanded. Kyojuro didn't try anything else, and simply left. You were outside playing with Pip and Mochi, giggling softly as they happily nudged your hands, almost like little dogs.

"(Y/N)? It's time to go home!" Kyojuro called out. You looked over at your father, scooping Pip and Mochi into your hands and holding them close to your shirt pocket so they could hop in.

"I haven't gotten to show grandpa Pip and Mochi yet, though!" You protested. Kyojuro simply chuckled in light amusement. Your innocence was really something he wanted to preserve for as long as he could.

"Maybe next time, alright? It's already late enough and we still need to get you home!" Rengoku took your hand in his own, hearing your saddened whine.

"Aww, ok." You sighed in defeat.

"So, where did you get all that sass from, young lady? Even the other Hashira are afraid to talk to my father that way." Kyojuro asks.

"Mrs. Makio gives me lessons." You said pridefully. However, you soon pouted and shook your head.

"Grandpa didn't even put in his two dollars!" You complain, an angry squeak was heard from Mochi in response.

"I'm sure he will next time, my little flame. Your grandfather is a very...impatient man, so I'm sure he's bursting with excitement to see you again!" Rengoku grinned. He knew this wasn't true, his father seemed to hate everyone. Now he would either especially dislike because of your sassieness, or tolerate you because he found it funny. If they ever came again, Rengoku figured he would give it to you and say it was from Shinjuro. Kyojuro knew he couldn't say that you were a demon to his father, that would surely solidify his hate towards you.

"Oh! Daddy, next time we should make cookies for Uncle Senjuro and grandpa!" You lit up. Kyojuro chuckled, nodding his head softly. He wasn't a very good cook at all, but he figured he may be able to get Shinobu to help you both.

"I believe we can make that happen, sunflower! Now, come quickly, it's time for you to get to bed." Rengoku picked you up, holding you up towards his shoulder. You giggle as he lifts you up, you had always liked it when he did this. He held you high enough were you felt on top of the world, but not enough to scare you.

"Weeee!" You called out in excitement, a wide smile gracing your face. A sparkle shimmered in your eyes, a reflection of the joy you felt at that moment. Rengoku smiled as well, the mere sight of your happiness lit up his world like he could never believe.

He would do anything to protect that smile...

(I'm sorry to the people who thought this chapter would be fluffy and sweet during the scenes with Shinjuro. Rengoku's father is an asshole, he isn't going to suddenly change because there is a child involved, especially after mistreating his own kids.)
