Echo walked out of her apartment she shared with her mom and brother, and down the street to see her best friend Amelia. She caught up to her just as Amelia stepped out of her own apartment, bags slung on either of her arms. She stopped about a foot away from Amelia's stairs.

"So this is it? Your really leaving? Your really leaving me all alone in this boring town?" Echo said, arms crossed over her breasts.

"Echo, your not alone you have Chase and Natalie, your mom, your brother. You will be perfectly fine without my constant presence" She opened the trunk of her 2004 Nissan Maxima and threw the bags in. As she straighten she fixed her eyes right on Echo.

"Seriously, we've been through this already. I need to leave and see new things. This town is stifling my creativity and if I don't get out now I will end up just as dull as everyone else. This is what we always talked about doing, Echo what happened to that?" She said pointedly. She was right though. They did talk about leaving one day, head to New York, make a living selling Amelia's art and Echo would try to book some gigs. Just living without restrictions, that's what they wanted. But she didn't realize Amelia would go after the dream without her.

"Yeah we did always talk about leaving, together. What happened to that Amelia?" She said, seething with anger. Amelia hooked her thumbs in her back pockets and leaned against her passenger door.

"Echo I'm sorry, but I have to leave now while I still can. I need to find somewhere I can call home and here isn't it not anymore. Not since...Well you know" She said, looking down at her scuffed Chucks. Echo didn't need her to elaborate to know she was talking about her parent's death a year back. Ever since then Amelia has never felt comfortable living here, everything reminded her of her loss and Echo knew it.

"I know...I just..I wished I could go with you is all. I don't want to be here without my best friend"

"Look, when you turn eighteen call me okay? I will drive all the way down here and snatch you up...But right now you have too much holding you back. School, your family, your little boy toy Chase. . I don't think you should leave just yet. But me? I have nothing keeping me here. " She fished her keys from her pocket then looked back at Echo.

"You have me..." Echo said sadness clouding her tone.

"This is gonna sound real bad but that's just not enough anymore Echo. I love you so much, your like my sister and you know it but I need more. I need something to live for and hopefully I can find that in New York. " Honest truth, no sugar coating, that's what Echo loved about Amelia.

"I'll miss you" Echo sniffed. Clutching herself tighter.

"I'll miss you more, love." She stepped forward and pulled Echo into a hug. Reluctantly, Echo wrapped her own arms around her friends frail frame. Amelia pulled away first then went around her the front of her car to unlock her door.

"Call or text me every day okay? I mean it, even if I don't answer right away. Love you" She called over her shoulder as she climbed into the drivers side.

"I love you too...I will Amelia" She yelled over the roar of Amelia's engine. Echo hugged herself trying to feign off the sudden chill in the air. She watched her friend pull off and drive down the road until she was completely out of sight.

Echo couldn't help the lonely feeling that crept over her as she watched her only true friend walk right out of her life.
