Rhaegar's and Lyanna's relationship began at the Tourney of Harrenhal, about one year before Robert's Rebellion. Rhaegar was one of the combatants in the tournament, and eventually he made it to the final round, where he faced off against his friend and personal bodyguard, Ser Barristan Selmy of the Kingsguard. Rhaegar won the round and was awarded with the crown of Winter roses. He was then supposed to give it to the most beautiful maiden in the crowd. What Rhaegar did with it shocked everyone. He silenced the entire audience by giving the crown to Lyanna Stark, rather than his own wife Elia. Since Lyanna was engaged to Robert, the act was most disrespectful to him. The tournament was beginning and lyanna had caught the eye of the mad kings son. Rhaegar targaryen....
Rhaegar's and Lyanna's actions had very severe consequences to their houses, as well as the entire realm. Brandon accused Rhaegar of kidnapping her, and traveled to King's Landing to demand Rhaegar's father, Aerys, to surrender Rhaegar for judgement and return Lyanna. Instead of handing over his son, Aerys had Brandon imprisoned for treason. Alerted by this, Lyanna's father Rickard went to King's Landing himself to demand his son's release, as well as Lyanna's.
"We urge you your grace,' varys told King Aerys 'to pardon Brandon Stark.'
' He threatened the Prince Rhaegar!' Aerys reminded his council.
'Rhaegar has stolen the boy's sister, and the boy he is the eldest son of our Warden of the North." Varys tried. But Aerys saw knives in every shadow. When Varys told him to treat the Starks with caution, he made him afraid. And what Aerys feared, he killed.
Brandon and all his companions charged with treason. Aerys demanded all their fathers, including Lord Rickard Stark, come to King's Landing and promised they would receive a fair trial. Instead, the king had them all burned alive, except for Brandon, who was strangled trying to save his father.
Ned, was visiting his friend and mentor, Lord Jon Arryn, at the Eyrie along with Lord Robert Baratheon, the young lord of Storm's End and Ned's best friend.
More importantly, Robert was betrothed to marry Lyanna and he was head over heels in love with Lyanna. Ned couldn't help but think that the feelings were not reciprocated. Not after seeing Lyanna light up seeing Rhaegar.
When King Aerys sent a message demanding that Jon hand over Ned and Robert to the crown, Jon raised the banners of the Vale in revolt rather than allow his former wards to be killed. Jon and Ned had both suffered the unjustified deaths of family members, including the Lord of the North, while Robert's betrothed had been kidnapped, apparently against her will. They agreed that this justified that action be taken against the king.
House Stark, House Arryn, and House Baratheonall called their banners and began assembling armies. Jon and Ned entered into negotiations with Lord Hoster Tully, whose daughter Catelyn had been betrothed to the marry Brandon.
Catelyn was in a fit. Not because he was dead but because she wasnt going to have a husband anymore.
''Ned.'' Alice whispered holding onto his hand. ''Im so sorry about your brother and father. ''
''Thank you alice.'' Ned told her softly as he squeezed her hand.
''I'm sure my father will help.'' Alice told him
''I'm sure he will want compensation.'' Ned countered perhaps little alice would be his after all.
After some discussions, Ned married Catelyn in his brother's place whilst Jon married her sister, Lysa. House Tully then joined the war on the rebels' side, ordering a full call to arms.
'Let it be known that Lord Eddard of House Stark and Lady Catelyn of house Tully are one heart, one flesh, one soul. Cursed be he who would seek to tear them asunder. In the sight of the Seven, I hereby seal these two souls, binding them as one for eternity. Look upon one another and say the Words.'
'Father. Smith. Warrior. Mother. Maiden. Crone. Stranger.' They repeated.
'I am his.'
'I am hers'
'He is mine'
'she is mine,'
'from this day, until the end of my days.' they echoed, Ned couldn't help but look to Alice in the audience a small smile on her face as she watched them.
'You may now cloak the bride with your protection.' Ned moved slowly, letting out a slow breath, this was to be his life, she was to be his life now. Catelyn Tully...
'In the presence of your family and friends, I now bind your hands together, to symbolize your new union of love, trust and friendship." He bound their hands together. 'Now, please look at one another and pledge your vows to seal your union.'
"I am yours whatever may come."
"I am... yours.... Whatever may come." Ned repeated softly and Catelyn kissed him.

''And here I thought this would be our wedding.'' ned mused sitting down next to alice.
''That would have been something to see.'' Alice whispered.
''You look beautiful alice.''
''Thank you.'' She replied softly. ''You look very nice. Catelyn is a lucky girl. Im sorry about everything... your brother seemed like a-''
''Cunt,'' ned finished and alice choked out a laugh.
''Ned!'' she exclaimed ''No he wasn't... well you knew him best.'' alice remarked.
''He was brave but he was a dick.'' Ned told her brushing her hair from her face. His hand lingered on her cheek. Alice liked the way ned looked at her but she didnt know why. He was about to marry her sister. Yet he looked at her like alice was the girl of his dreams.
Ever since Ned had met Alice he started thinking of a future for them. Which was crazy since she was a kid but people had been married younger. Now almost a year and a half later alice was beautiful big blue eyes staring back at him. Those plans faded when brandon died. He didnt much feel like getting married. Lyanna was missing and his father and brother dead and yet catelyn was smiling spinning around flipping her hair uselessly.
