The Maple Tree

The maple tree stands straight and tall

through all the seasons long.

Through summer's heat and autumn's winds

the birds sing out their songs.

The leaves fall from their branches

as the winter cold arrives,

and spring brings back the buds again

for yet another try.

The maple tree provides a home

for squirrels and insects, too.

It gives us shade and shelter,

Silent, generous, true.

It stands in my backyard

and it never fails to remind

a little seed can grow into

a long-standing history of time.
