"You have to press down on her chest", I yelled over the noise at the beach as Lotanna did as I instructed .
I blew air into her mouth repeatedly until she slowly jerked back to life coughing out all the water she had inhaled and swallowed. Lota let out a sigh of relief and I smiled....We helped her slowly sit up and tried to observe her.Lotanna engulfed her in a bear sized hug as she rambled on and on about how scared she was. "Evi, what happened? ", I asked referring to the situation of her almost drowning considering she was a star swimmer at our school. "I really don't know", she replied still kind of shook from the whole incident.
"Come on, let's go home, that's enough staying at the beach for a day ", I called my driver, Mr Samson and told him we were ready to go. He came and we all left for my house.
I looked out the window, enjoying the cool evening breeze. This is probably the part I introduce myself ...oh well.
My name is Kairaluchi Kristine Kennedy(I know what you're thinking) but everyone calls me Kaira, I'm 15 years old. My mother got married to a Canadian and I was born in Canada. They had some issues and got a divorce so we moved back to Nigeria when I was still an infant leaving my mum with a huge fortune(huge enough to give us a great life). That's enough for now.We got home a little after nine due to the infamous Island traffic. Mum was seated in the living room as we walked in. I tried sneaking past her and going to my room with my friends. What was I thinking? She'd probably know, anyways.
"Good evening, mummy", I greeted and she turned. My friends both muffled a greeting and she smiled at them and narrows her eyes at me. I knew what was coming so, I asked them to both go to my room and I'd meet them there".
"What is it by your time?", I just stared down silently, that is until one foot of her flip flops connected with my head. "Ow!", I complained. "I'm sorry, we lost track of time", I said, there was no way I was going to tell her that Evi almost drowned.
A typical Nigerian mother like mine would blame it on evil spirits at sea and I would never be within a 300 kilometer radius of a beach ever again. I love the beach. I don't swim though, bodies of water generally frighten me, never learnt to swim either. I just love the sand and the sea breeze.
"What is wrong with you, do you want to kill me? Chineke, lekwa m (God, watch me)", my mother exclaims like I'd just come home with a positive pregnancy test result.
"I'm sorry, mum, I won't repeat this unruly act", I say knowing exactly what would calm her down. "You better not", I hug her tight. "Goodnight, mum", I say running up the stairs.
"I'm taking the bed as usual", I announce as I enter the room to be deafened by Lota's not so subtle screams. "What's that?", I question as they are both comfortably laying on their bellies, eyes trained on my laptop.
"We're watching Enola Holmes 2", Evi says. Oh, already seen it. "How dare you?You traitors!", I exclaim pretending like I didn't betray them by watching it before them too.
"We're sorry, Kaira", Lota says genuinely remorseful. "Oh shut up, she's already seen it herself, it did say watched 99% when we clicked on it", Evi rats me out and Lota gasps, a hand on her chest. Dramatic much?
I decide to just lie down as well, watching the movie with them again. Soon enough, as expected, Lota screams. "Shut up", I tell and Evi just keeps her eyes trained on my laptop.
"That was the cutest kiss I have ever seen", she says referring to Enola and Tewkesbury finally sharing their first kiss. "Mhm, got that, now can you shut up?", I say and she just pouts and mumbles something incoherently.
You know you had the exact same reaction to their kiss, Kaira.
Shut up, K, we're supposed to be a team.
*eyeroll*
I know what you're thinking, is this girl crazy? Who was she talking to? Let me explain, that was my subconscious and I talk to her a lot. I call her lil' K but she doesn't really appreciate the lil' in the name so it's basically just K now and yes, she can roll her eyes.
"Kaira?", I'm snapped out of my thoughts by Evi calling my name. "Yes, what is it?", I ask. "We're hungry", Lota says rubbing her belly like a child.
"I'm not cooking for both of you so we'll just stealthily go downstairs and grab snacks when the movie is over, understood?", They both nod.
"Enolaaaaaa", Lota screams at the same time Tewkesbury screams when Enola purposefully rolls of a high platform. "Relax, she's alive", Evi says. The scene is filled with a lot of tension and they both watch keenly.
That Tewkesbury guy is totally hot
I know right
I'm getting hungry
You can't get hungry, you're just a voice in my head
Okay, then, maybe, you're hungry
Shut up, K
Rude, were a team' here
Yeah, right
Shortly, the movie is over, leaving Lota quite energetic. "Let's watch another one", she says with a very wide grin. "No", Evi and I exclaim at the same time and she pouts. "C'mon, it's almost 12, I need my beauty sleep", I make her understand.
"Ugh, can we get snacks now, my stomach is begining to grumble", she says and as if on cue, her stomach grumbles quite loudly and I chuckle.
"So, here's the plan, I go....", I'm cut off by Evi. "What plan? We simply walk downstairs and grab snacks", Evi says and I stare at her like she's gone mad. "But..but, it's dangerous", I say, fake shock over my face just to frustrate Evi. "I agree with, Kaira, it can be dangerous, we have to go ninja", Lota says and I snort.
Evi just begins walking while Lota and I very dramatically move dodging fake security laser beams. "Ssshhhh, your feet are loud", I tell Evi. "Your mum doesn't even care that you're up late, it's a summer Friday", she throws her hands in the air exasperatedly. I chuckle under my breath.
Does that stop our dramatic movement? No, we keep walking until we get to the kitchen. My mum's already there. She's on the phone.
"The flight is in two weeks, so we'll be back in Canada soon", she says and I freeze on the spot. "Mum?", She turns visibly shocked. She wasn't planning to tell me, was she? I open my mouth to ask a question that I dread hearing the answer. "We're moving?"
