It was one week until the Harry Styles concert. Euphoric energy surged throughout my body, causing me to slightly jerk.
"Relax." The nail lady said to me, giving me a small pat on my hand.
I glanced at her for a moment before lowering my head and quietly apologizing. The small moment of guilt did not last long, and a smile rested on my face. It felt surreal that this would be my tenth time seeing Mr. Styles in the span of 3 years. I would follow that man anywhere. And I scored pit tickets every time. One would say I am lucky; others would say I am spoiled. Putting in over time at work really pays off.
It was Monday November 1st, 2021. The day after Harryween. I was getting my nails done in anticipation for the concert. I always felt a need to have my nails done before any big event happening in my life. It was my safe place. The atmosphere of the nail salon was quite somber, which was quite fitting for the rainy weather outside. I live in Portland, so rain is to be expected. Rainy weather never really got to me. My dad would always describe me as "melancholy". I don't think he knew exactly what the word meant, but I rolled with it throughout my life.
As the nail tech massaged my hands with the strawberry scented lotion, I looked at my surroundings and noticed how busy it was. For a Monday, you wouldn't expect to see so many people. The nail tech finished her massage and I thanked her for her service. My nails were very plain, just a black color with a glossy finish. I thought to myself that it was about time I go and finish my errands. I paid at the front desk and exited the salon, running out to my car.
I carelessly opened my car door as the rain poured above me. It dripped down my face into my eyes, causing my vision to turn blurry. I knew I should have brought an umbrella, but planning was not one of my strong traits. I started my car, and it instantly began to play my music where I left off. My music had just started "Golden". I was listening to Fine Line album on repeat as I loved hyping myself up in every way possible. And with that, I was off to Trader Joes.
Running errands to Trader Joes and Target took about 2 hours. Sure, most of that time was spent looking at the newly set up Christmas decorations but who is to say Christmas comes earlier every year. They were my usual stops on my days off. I was pulling into my apartment complex garage when my phone began to ring. I don't often answer the phone, but it was my best friend Anna, and she'd have my head if I didn't answer. Especially since we were hanging out within the hour.
"Hey Anna. What's up?" I answered in a monotone voice.
I heard a scoff on the other end of the line. "Charlene, you can't answer the phone in such a plain way. Aren't you excited about tonight?"
I parked in my compact spot and shut my car off. "Obviously. I am excited about everything that is to come within this upcoming week!" I squealed silently, getting out of my car.
She joined me in squealing. Anna was coming to the concert with me, which I happily obliged to buy her ticket. This would be her fifth time seeing Harry live as she has joined me for other shows and traveled with me. What a trooper. I grabbed my belongings from the trunk and made way to the elevator.
Anna recollected herself and cleared her throat. "I just wanted to call you and let you know I'm on my way. Do you need anything before I arrive?"
"No, I'm good. I actually just got back from my errands." I stated, pressing the number 24 on the golden elevator. It jolted slightly, causing my heart to skip a beat. I should be used to that by now.
"Okay! I will see you in a bit then. Don't forget to buzz me in. Love you!" She hung up before I had a chance to reply.
After putting groceries away and before I could find a place for all my new clothes and decorations, the buzzer began to go off. I sighed, looking at the mess piled up on the table before me. Anna wouldn't care what kind of mess I had, just as long as there was wine she could drink. I buzzed Anna in and prepared myself for the eccentric girl.
"Hey there girl." Anna greeted, pulling me into a hug. I see her often but it was always nice to receive a warm embrace from someone you love. "What do we have planned for tonight?" She sang, walking over to my couch and plopping herself down.
I tilted my head and thought for a moment. "Do you want to watch videos from the Harryween concert yesterday? Did you see how adorable he looked as Dorothy?"
Anna giggled and pulled out her phone. "Let's do it." She loved Harry, but not nearly as much as I did. I don't know if I can even use the word love. I don't even know the man.
