Seb kept as close behind Joel as he could. He knew it didn't really matter, he knew the way back to the flat anyway, but now his goal was within reach he was determined not to let Immy's friend out of his sight.
The drive took a little longer than it had that morning due to a an accident just outside of Hemel Hempstead. After thirty five minutes he finally pulled into Mountbatten Close behind Joel.
Joel drove straight onto the drive, parking up behind a silver Vauxhall Corsa. Seb stopped at the kerb, in the same place he had parked that morning.
He saw Joel jump out of his car and head over towards him. He pressed the button that opened his window.
"They're back," Joel said. "You stay here. I mean it. I need to talk to her. If she doesn't want to see you then that's it."
"I understand."
"I don't know how long I'll be."
"I'll make myself comfortable." Joel's expression softened.
"For what it's worth, I believe you're genuine. You can't blame me for being careful though. She really has been through a lot."
After meeting her parents Seb could believe that. He knew there were so many other things he didn't know about her though. Like...everything. All he did know was they had an amazing connection, a connection he'd never experienced with anyone else. He wanted to get to know her. He wanted to learn everything about her.
"I'd be the same if I was her friend. You seem like a good man Joel. All I ask is that you try." Joel nodded then turned and headed towards his front door.
Seb shut his window. He realised he was still wearing his beanie. He reached up and pulled it off of his head. He leant slightly to the side so he could see his reflection in the rear view mirror. He ran his fingers through his short hair to tidy it up a bit.
To pass some time he took his phone off of the passenger seat and brought up Immy's photo. Then he realised he hadn't checked her Instagram lately. He loaded the app up and typed her name into the search bar. She'd added a new photo since he'd last looked. He looked at the date. She'd added it just a couple of hours ago. It was a selfie of her and a blonde woman who he assumed must be Joel's girlfriend. They were both laughing at something. Damn, she was so beautiful, the baby blue beanie on her head suited her so much. He just wanted to pull her into his arms and make her his again. Again? She's never been yours, he reminded himself.
He looked over at the flat. There was no sign of movement. Had Joel told her yet?
He was getting impatient. What would he do if she wouldn't see him? He didn't want to hurt her any more but not seeing her would break his heart. She had to see him. She just had to.
After what felt like forever the front door opened. Joel came out. He'd changed from his zoo fleece into a padded black coat, not dissimilar to Seb's own. The blonde woman from the Instagram photo followed him out.
Seb opened his window again as they reached the car. "Ok, so I told her you paid me a visit."
"What did she say?"
"Something along the lines of 'What the fuck does he want?' She wasn't best pleased."
His heart sank. That was it then. It was over.
