Maia sat in the back of her training class, her mind elsewhere as the chief resident ran through the procedures the residents would get to take part in for the rest of the week.
"All right that's all for today— get to work!" The chief spoke before exiting the room.
"Maia you seem kinda out of it today, uh you good?" Another resident Maia had grown acquainted with asked. The pool of blue uniforms exited as the boy eyed the girl, concerned on where her focus was since this wasn't like her.
"Huh... it's fine Jeremy, I've just had a lot going on" she spoke standing up and fixing her lab coat.
"Are you sure? You're normally on your game" he questioned again, tailing behind her as she walked out the room. "I promise I'm fine Jeremy" Maia spoke to him, perfectly hiding the fact she was annoyed with the boys badgering.
"I don't mean to pry... I've just grown to care about you.." his cheeks glowed red on his pale face, admitting what Maia already knew. She knew Jeremy liked her but Jeremy had also known she was very much a lesbian. Maia decided to pretend she hadn't heard the guy, waving him off when she made it to one of her patients rooms.
"Hello Mr Dawson, how's that shoulder feeling?" Maia chirped, eyeing the man who laid in the bed recovering from a gunshot wound.
"Great, great.... You guys really take care of me" he smiled.
"Just doing our job" Maia smiled back. She tapped on the iPad she held in her hand with the patient's information. "Looks like you'll be out of here Tomorrow, the doctor wants to do a final review. But you look fine and your vitals have been stable— it should be a breeze"
The man's face lit up from the news, he couldn't help but to thank the woman who stood in front of him in her perfect pressed lab coat. "Don't thank me Mr Dawson, just don't let us catch you back here again" Maia finished before she said her goodbyes to the man, slipping out the room to head to the er. Today has been slow so Maia didn't expect much to happen.
"Hey Maia, wait up" a tall woman called out, Maia turned to the voice. The voice who's face was blocked by the huge bouquet of red roses she tried to keep hold of.
"Woah, someone loves you" Maia spoke.
"No, someone loves you" the lady said, handing the large bouquet to Maia. The weight of it in her small frame almost knocking her over.
"What do you mean, these are mine?" Her face confused as she peered out from the side of the bouquet.
"A delivery man dropped them here earlier, said they were for a Maia. There's a card!!" The lady— who Maia now realized was the hospital's receptionist— informed, before walking away leaving Maia to ponder on who the bouquet could've been from.
Maia walked to the break room, placing the flowers on a table that was vacant. She was relieved no one else was there, she was kind of embarrassed by the surprise. She rummaged through the flowers, careful to not damage any as she searched for the note. Finding it the outside of the envelope was indeed addressed to her. Wasting no time, she ripped open the envelope reading the contents of the letter.
I'm not even sure where to begin, I never wanted you to see the things you've witnessed. I've never wished this for you, but I also can't apologize for the things that I'm built to do. This is my life... but I can apologize for how my life may make you feel. I hope you could forgive me, I hope you want to see me again, the way I yearn for you. Stai diventando l'amore della mia vita.
Maia stood still, her eyes still roaming across the letter. It wasn't signed but Maia knew who it was from. Maia hadn't heard from Lucky for days, and to randomly receive a bouquet of the most perfect roses— her mind raced with thoughts, she assumed the no communication was Lucky's attempt of giving her space, which she needed.
And when she was finally getting used to not hearing from the girl, the sudden gesture just couldn't help but to make her heart swoon. No one has ever gifted her flowers Maia thought to herself, still examining the note. Not wanting to waste more time and risk getting in trouble, Maia thought it would be best to just figure all this out later. Putting the note in her pocket, she left the bouquet on the table to return to her work.

Pulling up to her apartment , Maia exited her car. She decided to bring Raquel with her from work since she needed her advice, and the fact that the two had carpooled this morning leaving Raquel no choice.
"So are we now gonna discuss the bouquet in the room?" Raquel questioned, slipping her shoes off before taking a seat at the counter top.
Maia sighed eyeing the bouquet, it was truly beautiful. But it confused her, she thought what she seen would've been it for her but the flowers made her think otherwise.
"I don't know what to do Rock", her lips frowning.
"Well based of what you've told me, she's fucking crazy" Raquel paused, looking towards the flowers.
"But" Maia motioned for her to continue.
"Oh yeah... but she's in the mafia babe, I mean doesn't that literally mean violence?" She deadpanned.
"I mean yeah, but you didn't see her face Raquel.... It was as if she enjoyed it" Maia spoke while opening the fridge, retrieving a bottle of wine that was already halfway finished. She grabbed two glasses, pouring out the last of it— handing one to Raquel.
"Everyone is sick in their own way" Raquel spoke before bringing the glass to her lips. "You literally became a surgeon because you like the idea of having someone's life in your hands... that's kinda twisted" she shrugged
Maia stared at her best friend in disbelief, "WHAT?!" Her eyes widening "you think I enjoy the stress of someone else's life in my hands?"
"Well I mean why else would surgeons be surgeons, they have the power"
"Yes, but no one likes the idea of having someone's life in their hands... I think we more so like that we have this ability to save a life, you know we're the ones with the knowledge, we can tell you what's wrong and fix it" she steadily spoke.
"You literally get paid because people are getting hurt, no hurt people no doctors... you see where I'm going with this?"
"No, no I don't Raquel", Maias eyes rolled. "You're literally a nurse"
"Yeah? Not a surgeon"
" I'm not having this conversation anymore, how did we even get here?"
Raquel shrugged her shoulders, taking another sip of the wine that sat in front her. "So Lucky? What are we doing?"
"I think I love her" Maia spoke quickly, her hands getting sweaty as the confession slipped from her mouth.
"So there's your answer" Raquel grinned at the girl.
Maia couldn't believe she'd just said that. But she was indeed falling for Lucky and couldn't help but to love her. Her lip trembled slightly as she thought about how she once believed it was over between the two. She pulled her lip between her teeth attempting to hold back tears that we're fighting to escape. She missed Lucky, and she now felt sure that she would be able to move forward. She understood what Lucky's lifestyle entailed, and she was ready to be back at her side.
