Dawson's POV:

Have you ever been loved by someone to the point where you begin to suffocate in their love? If you haven't, you're one unlucky human. But, if you have, you're slightly less unlucky.

And, you might also understand if I told you that I feel suffocated by my mother's love.

"Hey, mum." I almost did a double take at the sight of her in my apartment. "I didn't know you were visiting today."

"I thought I'll come in person, we have something important to discuss, Dawson." Mum waved me to join her in the dining room.

"I need to take a shower first."

"Alright, go on, be quick. Hans and Elle have prepared dinner already."

"They're here too??"

Just then, as if on cue I heard the loud voices of my twin siblings from the kitchen. Even though the two of them fought most of the time, they were inseparable. They got along like no other.

"Just hurry back, sweetie." Mum had given me a wide smile, revealing her sharp canines.

"What do you even wanna talk about? I hope it won't be what I'm thinking." I smiled back at her before turning to the hallway. As I padded up to my room, I heard my brother yell from the kitchen.

"Leave him be, mum! He isn't giving in anytime soon."

"Oh you shut up, Hanson!"

I shook my head and continued walking, smiling to myself as their muffled voices reached all the way to my room. After taking the fastest shower, I joined them at the dining table, dressed in a plain shirt and sweatpants.

Mum was seated at the head of the table, the seat at her right left vacant for me. Hanson's twin, Giselle sat to mum's left, eyes glued to her phone. As I walked in, she snapped her head up, smiling at me. I passed a warm smile back to her and settled between mum and Hanson.

"So, what did you guys want to talk about?" I asked, forking the potatoes in my plate.

"Look Dawson, I'll be direct, not everyone out there is the same as her." Mum had begun after a thought. "You need to go out and socialize, meet new people. You might fall in love again."

"That's exactly what he doesn't want." Hanson couldn't keep quiet for long. He thought it was necessary for him to say something all the time.

"I know you're worried about me and all, but we only live once. I don't want to ruin my life by falling for the wrong person again. I'm quite satisfied with my current lifestyle."

"What about romance? You can't possibly live your whole life being single. I suggest you meet up with this girl, she's Mrs. Delaney's neighbor, really pretty." Mum placed a comforting hand on my arm.

"I don't care if she's pretty or not, mum. I just want a loyal partner."

"I'm sure she'll be loyal to you."

"No Mum, no. Not right now."

"Then, give us your word."

"My word?"

"Promise us that you'll find yourself a girlfriend in the next six months."

"Don't you think that's a bit too much, mum?" Giselle quirked a brow.

"You shut it, Elle! I'm trying to have a serious conversation with your brother here."

"Please, mum. Don't force me like that."

"I just want to see you settled—"

"MUM! I DON'T WANT A GIRLFRIEND!" I couldn't help but snap, my fork clattering loudly on my plate.

There was silence for a couple of minutes before Mum said, "Well, I don't mind if you get a boyfriend."

"Where did that come from??"

"We will all accept you with open arms, sweetie."

"But—"

"You don't have to hold back now. I get it already. I'm so sorry, I should've tried to understand you."

"I should've known when you said you wanted to marry that guy from Bridgeton." Hanson's brown eyes were as wide as saucers.

"All this time, you were hiding yourself and I kept setting you up with random girls…"

"I'm surprised that you guys are surprised." Giselle was oddly calm about it, as if she had known all along.

But how could she know something about me that I didn't even know myself?

The rest of the dinner went in a mixture of tears and shoulder pats. I didn't get the chance to tell anyone that I didn't like guys. But, the thought kept roaming in my head.

What if I actually liked guys?

I mean, I never had any close friends in high school but there was a guy on the soccer team who always smiled at me. I used to think he was cute and had beautiful eyes, but that didn't scream that I was gay, right?

I needed to clear my head.
