My job was done in Minas Tirith and it was time for me to move on. After Thorongil left, there wasn't much reason for me to stay. So I scoured middle-earth searching for a place to live. A place which felt like home.
"Fangorn Forest. The place of my birth." I thought.
There was important history behind Fangorn, which Mother told me before. It was one of many secrets she shared with me. The coven put a protection spell on the forest, since it was sacred because of my birth, which changed its inhabitants.
Ents. The witches created ents to protect the sacred forest. The protection spell was to keep intruders out and it worked for quite a time. Orcs refused to enter, and all other races feared what could be living in the trees. Little did they know they had feared the trees themselves.~~~~~~~
I entered the dark forest and immediately heard creaking in the trees. I've never meant an ent before, but I heard the stories. I wondered today if I would meet one, and if I would be alive to tell it after.
The forest was beautiful, it felt like home. I wandered around the forest, looking up at the trees in amazement. They were easily fifty feet tall, or more, and that made me imagine how huge the ents would be. The tree trunks were thick and strong, and the canopy of the trees let in little sunlight. It was dark here, but not as dark as Mordor, where I once was. I knew this would be the place to make my home. Now it was just time to meet the neighbors.
"Hello?" I called out.
I waved my hands and looked at the trees, but none of them moved. I called out again but to no avail. I decided to keep moving deeper into the forest, and I saw a clearing up ahead. I moved on and entered the field, and it was amazing. There were wild flowers everywhere, their colors vibrant and the sun was shining down upon me. I decided this would be a good place to meditate.
So here I sat down, crossing my legs, and placing my hands together. I bowed my head and stared at the grass beneath me, then finally closed my eyes and began to chant.
"Loquere, speak, ad me. Tibi magna et forti fortuna. Sequere vocem meam. Follow my voices my friends. Veni ad me." I chanted over and over again.
I stopped once I heard creaking. Then I heard thundering coming from the ground. They were awake.
I turned around to look behind me, and saw one standing in front of me. An ent. It was say twenty feet tall, and his eyes peered down at me.
"I haven't heard that language in a very long time." The ent said.
I slowly got up from being sat, and stared up at the gigantic tree. I took off my cloak's hood and held up my hands.
"I'm Blythe." I introduced myself.
"I do not know who you are." The ent said.
"I know. But I know of you." I said. "My coven has protected you ents for many years."
"So... you're a witch?" The ent asked.
"Yes..." I answered.
There was a long pause as the ent thought of what to say. "I remember now." The ent then spoke.
I just nodded and looked around the rest of the trees, and I saw more ents walking out of the forest. Soon I was surrounded by talking trees.
"What's your name?" I asked the tree.
A half-humorous look came with a green flicker into his eyes. "For one thing it would take a long while: my name is growing all the time, and I've lived a very long, long time; so my name is like a story. Real names tell you the story of things they belong to in my language, in the Old Entish as you might say. It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time saying anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a long time to say, and to listen to. But if you must know, you witches called me Treebeard. I speak for the ents, and for the forest and all its inhabitants."
"Well Treebeard... Fangorn is the place of my birth. I have come back to make it my home. I shall not hurt any living being or tree while I'm here. But I need a place to stay for my time to come." I said.
Treebeard looked down upon me, and then looked at all the other ents. The spoke in Old Entish, and I knew this was going to take awhile.
So I sat down and pondered in my thoughts. The ents spoke above me and occasionally looked down at me. But here I waited for their decision. I needed them to accept me, as for I wanted to stay here. Also, I wouldn't be alone if I had the ents.
"Blythe Briar." Treebeard said. "I remember you."
I quickly stood up and looked up at Treebeard with anticipation.
"You may stay." He said. "But don't stay in one place... Keep moving. For the present is ahead of you, and the past behind."
"Thank you Treebeard." I said and bowed. "I am in your debt."
"No debt. Just returning the favor." Treebeard said. "Goodbye now."
All then ents then wandered off and went back into their forest. I guess I was welcomed here, and it was time to make this place my home.~~~~~~~
Months have passed, and I finally got my home settled. I found this cave near a waterfall in Fangorn, and decided to move in. I thought a cave would be best as I shall not need to cut down any trees to make a hut.
I had a nice bed and large fire pit to keep me warm. I had a leaf curtain blocking the entrance to the cave which kept some of the warmth inside. I had my cauldron and alchemy set up in the corner, and my shelves were filled with bottles and alchemical ingredients. I even had a wolf pelt on the floor for a carpet.
I looked around my cave and smiled to myself. Yes, I was alone. Yes, I missed the company of people, the company of someone in particular. But the ents and animals were to be my companions. So in reality I wasn't alone. It was just me, this cave, and the trees.
