Seb's eyes opened widely with shock. What the hell was Immy talking about?
"What?" he managed to spit out, letting go of Immy's hand.
"She told me Seb. She told me that you were expecting your own baby."
"She's a damn liar," Seb exclaimed, bringing his fist down on the table. Some of Immy's tea spilt out of the mug from the vibration. "She is not pregnant, and she hasn't been pregnant since she gave birth to Lauren."
Immy's face paled. Juliet had been lying? All this time she'd been upset thinking about Seb and Juliet expecting a baby and it had all been a lie.
"She's got a lot to answer for!"
"Seb, just leave it. You said yourself she's cooperating over the girls. If you confront her she may start being difficult."
"So I just let her get away with it? She told you she was pregnant! She told you I was in Belgium. She told you I'd had other affairs! She told anything she damn well could to get rid of you. We could have been together Immy! You wouldn't have had to go through this alone. You could have been mine. I could have..." His voice tailed off.
He looked down at the red and white checked tablecloth. He couldn't remember ever being this angry. How could Juliet do this to him? When had the woman he used to love become so spiteful?
He looked back up at Immy, trying to read her face. What was she thinking? She did believe him, didn't she?
"Immy, I swear to God, there were no other women. There was no baby. I promise you. I swear on my life."
Immy looked at him, he seemed so genuine. She knew she believed him about the baby but she wasn't so sure about the other women. There was a small part of her mind that kept telling her he'd cheated once with her, what was stopping him doing it again?
"What's done is done," she sighed. Seb reached over and took her hand again.
"But we are not done. Please Immy, tell me we are not done."
"I can't tell you that Seb. I'm sorry, I just...it wouldn't work. Me and you, we're from two different worlds."
"Why wouldn't it work? Why does anything matter apart from the fact that I want you and you want me? You cannot deny that Immy. Last night...it proved that connection is still there. We're made for each other Immy."
"Some things are just not meant to be," she said sadly. Seb began to panic. He was losing her. He could feel her slipping through his fingers. He had to persuade her that they were worth taking a chance on.
"How can you say that Immy? We haven't even tried. I need you. I love you! You may not be ready to hear that but it's the truth. It's ridiculous, I know it is, as you said we barely know each other, but I know myself and I know I love you."
"Seb, there's so many things against us."
"Like?"
"Juliet for a start. I know you're divorcing but if she was to find out that we were together what do you think she'd do? She'd hit you where it hurts. Your kids."
"She cannot legally stop me seeing them. I don't want to have to go through the courts but I will. I won't let her dictate who I'm with."
"The age difference."
"Makes no difference. Age is just a number.
"You're a multimillionaire, I'm just a school teacher."
"You're just trying to think of any reason not to give me a chance."
