After that my dear friends, Sherlock came over. Whether he knew what Mary and John were planning is uncertain. John testifies that he did notice that something was wrong and asked them about it, to which they replied that they were stressed out about the baby and this cleared up matters for him. The only moment the plan seemed on the verge of failure was when Mary accidentally lost track of which glass contained the poison, but ironically Sherlock himself noticed that one glass held a slightly different liquid in colouration and thus the plan was saved.

The next day Mycroft came over to talk to John and deduced that something was wrong but assumed it was Mary's pregnancy. When Mycroft found his only brother dead, he was able to deduce instantly that the culprits were John and Mary but it was too late. The same poison that they had given Sherlock was already coursing through him and the same fate that met his younger brother took the elder.

In fact, when I started investigating the case they tried to poison myself as well and it was only a last minute call that saved me from meeting the same fate.

Eventually Mary left. John found out her real secret which was that she used to be an assassin, which is why she was so well versed in poisons and felt no remorse over killing Sherlock. His rage lasted for so long that eventually she couldn't handle it and abandoned him to face his conscience alone. Driven mad with grief and anguish, John soon began seeing visions, ghosts of Sherlock and Moriarty. Such was his state that when I discovered who Sherlock's murderer was, he didn't resist arrest and confessed straight away.

One thing will always remain a mystery to John, why he didn't shoot Moriarty when he had the chance and prevent all this from happening.

Sincerely and with deep regret,

Inspector G. Lestrade
