Foxtrot pounced onto a scarlet train that had started gliding slowly up the track. As he landed on the smooth, grey floor, the train sped up and the Hogwarts Express started its long journey towards Hogwarts. The dirty brick wall soon became a haze of brilliant blue sky and lush trees as they passed buildings and fields. Foxtrot stared at the beautiful sight for a moment before sitting up and steadying his mind. The African Hunting Dog trekked along each compartment, peering in. Many we're filled with students, excitedly pulling on their robes or shoving their newest chocolate frog cards into peoples noses. He passed a compartment filled with other first years, a very beautiful bat and a stone grey goat, another filled with several tigers, each a different age. He passed the last one with deep confusion at the seen inside. A small German Shepard sat angrily next to a baby blue and white Dalmatian that was branding a wand and had seemed to turn the other dog's trunk a very violent shade of bubblegum pink. As he edged nearer to the end of the train a soft trickle of water soaked his paws. Staring at his wet feet for a second, he noticed that water had seemed to flood that end of the train. No one else had noticed as far as Foxtrot could see. His eyes followed the stream up the a compartment door. As he slowly walked towards it, bitter voices could be heard inside, flustered words that he couldn't make out. Curiosity got the better of him and Foxtrot slid the compartment door open to reveal the most amusing scene. Two octopus's stood in ankle deep water whilst a freckled narwhal and a pale green sting ray sat on top the cushioned seat.
"We left you two alone for two minutes," the Sting Ray shouted. The voice was menacing but similar to Foxtrot's and he guessed they were first years too. As Foxtrot stared a little closer he noticed that the ray had a number of bright blue spots that covered his body, almost like leopard prints. "and we come back to find you've flooded the compartment!"
"We haven't even started our first year yet!" The narwhal shouted. He was a light stone grey with a pale stomach and dark freckles covering his top half. The two octopus's cowered but stood their ground.
"Hey!" Foxtrot finally broke the tension. The hunting dog stepped into the compartment and leaped onto a seat, trying to avoid the water. "What's happening here." He said a little exasperated.
"They've flooded the bloomin' compartment!" The Narwal exclaimed.
"We wanted our first journey to Hogwarts to feel like home." The octopus on the left said pitifully. The sting ray interrupted,
"Yeah but I don't think this is what 'homely' means. Impressive magic anyway. What spell did you use? Surely not Aguamenti! That's N.E.W.T standards."
"Oh yeah! Dad taught us." The right octopus exclaimed. He was a beautiful bright, cherry red colour compared to his twin, a brown coloured octopus spotted with slightly faint splatters from a deep maroon to a chestnut ginger.
"It's very hard though..." The left one sighed and his blazing mustard yellow eyes stared at the floor for a minute and Foxtrot couldn't help feel impressed. Ever since he had first gotten his own Hogwarts letter, he had read every single wizarding book, he could put his paws on. Flourish and Blotts was like a heaven to him although he rather enjoyed peeking into The Apothecary and staring in wonder at the many different ingredients. He thought of how weird it had been to think that the dragon blood he'd stared at for half a minute had once flowed through the vanes of the terrifying beast. Many of his books held detailed descriptions and instructions on the charms, jinxes and curses but Foxtrot had only managed a minuscule flicker of light from the end of his newly bought wand before all was dark again when he tried. Aguamenti was a difficult charm to pull off, the reason why it was learned at such a high age. He thought of the diagram of a beautiful waterfall of silky, glistening water float out from a mahogany wand. A faint rainbow could be seen through the jet and Foxtrot remembered staring curiously at the description, the droplets falling from the shower, the grooves in the wand and every wrinkle in the holders hand.
The silence was broken when a soft tap on the door brought their attention back to reality. The compartment stared at the entrance, standing there, already in his pearly white shirt and coal black robes, was a wine coloured red panda, staring nervously at the damp compartment floor. As he looked up, a look of relief flickered across his face at the sight of his fellow first years. The brown octopus stretched out his tentacle and slid the door open. A sort of quiet fell over the array of animals, broken only when the red panda spoke.
"Can I sit with you guys?" His voice was shaky but calm. The panda looked friendly but shy. Foxtrot felt pitiful for the creature, he seemed not to have found his own compartment yet. The sting ray opened his mouth to speak but Foxtrot cut in.
"Umm... sure!" He strolled along the seat to free one, resting on his and what seemed to be the narwal's trunk. A look of delight filled the red pandas face.
"Hey Dobble I found a compartment! Come sit with us!" The red panda called down the hall. His face had turned a very unnatural shade of pink. In an undertone to the others he whispered, "Don't mind if my friend joins us?"
"Yeah sure. Come on in." The narwal beckoned him in. Foxtrot peered down the hall from his perch on top of his trunk. He gasped as a rose beige dinosaur trotted towards their compartment. He looked small and and harmless but their was something menacing about the pointed teeth and focused eyes. Dobble stepped gingerly into the compartment and joined the red panda on sitting next to Foxtrot. The door gently closed and the buzzing from the train outside ceased. At this, the octopus twins leapt onto the seat next to the narwal and sting ray before deciding hastily to share one, only one seat was left.
"We should each introduce ourselves." The red panda said and Foxtrot agreed. He was excited to found out what his fellow first years names were. "I'll go first," he carried on "I'm called Terry."
"You already know who I am." The Tyrannosaurus rex sighed before staring at the narwal.
"Oh! I'm Narl. It's really nice to meet you all. Especially after..."
"Them." The sting ray finished, glaring at the two octopus's who stared innocently at the ceiling, whistling a sort of sailers song. Everyone gave a soft giggle including the two twins. "I'm ray," Ray turned towards the twins "and these are..."
"Hey!" The brown octopus shouted. His twin crossed his tentacles and scoffed,
"Let us introduce ourselves and you can introduce yourself." Ray and Narl rolled their eyes before once again the entire compartment fell into a hysterical laughter. Once the laughter died the first octopus spoke,
"Well I'm Red." Said the cherry coloured octopus.
"And I'm Octo." The rather pretty maroon and chestnut one said quite enthusiastically. Silence fell and all the gleaming eyes fell on Foxtrot. He felt his face go as hot and boiling lava.
"I'm Foxtrot." The African hunting dog answered. Dobble broke in after him and Foxtrot sighed,
"By the way, Dobble's spelt 'D O B B L E.'"
"Those are some really cool names." Ray said. Each animal gave a soft smile and all of them turned a rather bright shade of fuchsia. Foxtrot felt an odd calmness spread over him. Suddenly, he felt more comfortable with his new friends, like something had just clicked between them all. Somehow he knew they all felt it too, felt that there was also a hole that needed more fabric and sewing to fix, as though they were missing a gaping hole in their newly found friendship.
"Well..." Red started. "What house do you guys want to be in?"
"I don't mind." Said Narl "As long as it's not,"
"Slitherin." Both Ray and Narl finished with a little shudder. Foxtrot gave a small chuckle.
"I'm sure Slytherin isn't that bad."
"I don't know..." sighed Ray.
"Well I would like to be in Gryffindor. 'Where dwell the brave at heart.'" Dobble answered. "Although I don't really mind anything else. I don't think I'm a Ravenclaw, I'm too thick for them. Thick minded." He added at a sharp look from Narl that clearly stated 'Don't be rude to yourself.'
"Agreed but I think yellow would suit me. Actually... maybe not. My whole family says I'm going to be in Hufflepuff." Terry shrugged.
"Same." Said an unknown voice from the door. They all turned their heads to see the the rather small baby blue dalmatian standing in the doorway Foxtrot had seen in the compartment with the German Shepard earlier, his ears had grown to thrice their size. "You won't believe how angry Deutsch can get. I mean... I did turn his suitcase pink... but that's no reason to grow my ears!"
"Whose Deutsch?" Asked Ray.
"German Shepard, first year, quite sweet until you change the colour of his suitcase, trained to be a guide dog. That's all I know." The dogs ears were still growing and soon they almost covered his eyes.
"Actually though, do any of you know how to use Reducio? They're getting out of hand." The group stared in utter astonishment at the sight before Terry sighed and muttered, "Come here. Reducio. Just tell me when they're back to normal size." The dog opened his mouth but Dobble interrupted.
"Look at your reflection in the water on the floor. That should work. Talking about the water, what happened?" Dobble looked at Narl who glared at Red and Octo. Dobble smiled, he didn't need words to understand what had happened.
"Can I sit with you guys. I know it's only been ten minutes into the journey but many compartments are full and I don't want to intrude on other people."
"Yeah! Come sit with us!" Octo called and the Dalmatian smiled.
"I'm called White and Blue. It's long but easy to remember." White and Blue grinned at them all and a chunk of fabric was suddenly, slowly sewn into their cloth of friendship but still their was a gaping hole that they all tried to ignore.
The compartment was filled with silence once again before red sprung up from his seat, clearly an idea had hit him.
"I think, we should try playing a game." He stated, emphasising the last few words.
"Sure but what game?" Asked Terry.
"Exploading snap!" Shouted Octo but Dobble interrupted.
"I'm muzzle born. Muzzle is the right word right? Professor Hagrid didn't really make that clear when he came to tell me about Hogwarts."
"Yeah muzzle's right." Foxtrot said. He was staring dreamily out of the window, not really taking any of the view in.
"So you're pure or half?" Dobble questioned. Foxtrot came out of his stance with a shudder and stared guiltily at the cushioned seat for a moment before answering.
"Half-blood. Moms muzzle born as well. Dads wizard blood. I've never asked if he's pure of half so I just assume I'm a half blood."
"Wow!" Dobble looked impressed.
"It's only my blood." Foxtrot chuckled.
"I know it's just...I've always wondered what it would be like to grow up in the wizarding world."
"Chaotic." Terry said and the pair stared at him. "What? You wake up every morning and find that your siblings have played some trick on you. Usually I end up with my paws growing boils but tentacles on a bad day."
"Ouch." Said White and Blue.
"Nah." Terry shrugged "Mom told them to stop so they listened."
"What should we play then?" Asked Narl.
"Ummm. Maybe..." Octo started but an old, wobbling voice broke in.
"Want anything from the trolly dears?" A grizzled dodo walked trembling past the door, a trolley grasped in her feathers. Mountains of sweets and chocolates piled ontop of it, many bright colours filled with sugar and syrup. The wafting smell of coca beans, strawberry and lemon drifted up to all their noses. Foxtrot rustled through his backpack that he'd stuffed next to his trunk. A pile of little, golden, bronze and silver coins rattled as he pawed them. He passed her a couple galleons and grasped at some Berty Botts Every Flavour Beans, cauldron cakes and some magical sherbet lemons that can apparently change the tone of your voice. His partners followed suit, grabbing at anything they could reach. The prune like dodo chuckled and waddled up to the next compartment.
"What we're we talking about?" Narl asked.
"Oh yeah!" Octo started,"Why don't we play truth or dare?"Author dragon here, this is a long chapter I know.
