Wolfie woke up to the sound of someone knocking on the door. They looked down to see Gwen snuggled up to their chest. They smiled as the watched her stirring. She was adorable when she slept. Wolfie ran their fingers through her hair, which caused her to lift her foot, scratching at where she was stroked. A small noise of admiration left Wolfie's lips as they watched Gwen mumble in her sleep, and then relax. They were startled when the banging on the door increasingly got louder. In a panic not to wake Gwen up, Wolfie slipped away, put clothes on and ran downstairs.
"Coming!" They yelled, but the banging continued. Wolfie approached the door and opened it, being greeting with a punch In the face. Wolfie groaned and rubbed their face.
"Careful where you're knocking, and try not to knock so hard!" Wolfie shouted. A honeyed voice responded.
"Well sorry if I didn't know you were right outside the door." It answered. Wolfie looked up to see a slightly taller woman around her 30's staring down at them. Her hair was brown and put in a small ponytail. She wore a grey vest and a dark grey jacket hung around her waist. Her black eyes pierces into Wolfie's while she was impatiently tapping her black boot on the stone ground.
"Hello?" The woman asked, grumpily.
"Mind explaining who you are and why you're here?" Wolfie asked. They didn't want to be gone for long in case Gwen woke up.
"My name is Esther, I'm looking for someone who went missing from where I last saw them." She responded.
"Very well. Come in." Wolfie welcomed Esther, who dragged her feet inside the house. Esther wandered towards the couch and plopped herself upon it.
"So who are you looking for?" Wolfie asked the visitor.
"Blonde, short hair, one eye, deformed hand, hard to miss unless she hasn't left the alleyway down the street." Esther chuckled while Wolfie stared at her. That was a perfect explanation of Gwen, but they doubted whether or not they should tell her where she was. She hadn't apologized properly, she seemed extremely rude despite her calm tone of voice, she fell onto the sofa like a brick. Wolfie muttered to themself and was about to respond when Gwen walked down the stairs.
"Hi Wolfie, I heard the door open and just thought somebody came in-" her eyes fell upon Esther who was slouched on the sofa and she fell silent. Esther noticed her too and stood up from where she was sat, and stared at her.
"Gwen?" Esther mumbled. She wandered to Gwen and pulled her into a tight embrace, to which she responded with a quiet whimper. "I'm your mother, you need to make it clear that you ran off to find a new home!" Esther sobbed, although Wolfie wondered whether this was sincere or not.
"B-but.." Gwen started.
"No buts darling, you have to tell me these things, we've talked about this." Esther said, randomly tightening her grip on Gwen. "Although I see where you're thinking. I am you mother after all. I know everything about you; you likes, dislikes, favourite colour, strong points... weak points." And with that, Esther grabbed a knife from her pocket and stabbed Gwen in her chest, watching as her body convulsed with pain. She pulled the knife out, blood pouring down her arm to the floor below. Esther was on top of her body now, one knee pressing against Gwen’s throat while the other rested at her waist, and Gwen was struggling, trying to get away while Wolfie stood there, waiting for adrenaline to course through them.
Esther raised the knife again but she didn’t stab this time, because this time she knew it wasn’t necessary. “Don’t try anything stupid, or you won’t be alive much longer.”
The sound that came out of Gwen’s mouth was like nothing Esther had ever heard before; something animalistic and inhuman. It was followed by another gurgling cough, and then a wheeze that turned into a choked off cry of pain. Her eyes were squeezed shut tight enough that tears leaked from the corners of her closed lids. The look of pure fear on her face made Esther feel bad.
She put the knife down carefully and wiped the blood off her hand onto the front of her jeans. This wouldn't do. She couldn't kill Gwen, not after all they'd been through. She walked off, leaving Wolfie to care for Gwen's wounds. Wolfie quickly bandaged Gwen, who whimpered in response. “It’s nothing, we got this, Gwen! It’ll be okay, you hear me?” Wolfie soothed as they helped the injured girl sit up. She took a deep breath and nodded, her eyes still red from crying. “Thank you for taking care of me. You’re really cool...” She smiled weakly before resting back on the couch, closing her eyes tightly.
“No problem at all!” Wolfie replied, smiling fondly. “I’d never forgive myself if I didn’t."
"Don't worry about it, dear." Gwen muttered weakly.
"Probably best I get you sat up, aye?" Wolfie said, rubbing her arm comfortingly. She nodded, allowing Wolfie to carry her and carefully readjust her on the couch. They started observing Gwen, searching for any more wounds, but a couple of bruises were found. Wolfie walked of to soak a towel with cold water, then returned to Gwen and gently dabbed the towel on her bruised skin. Gwen whimpered in pain, shivering in agony while Wolfie tried to comfort her. “I’m sorry, Dear! This is just going to hurt a little longer, ok? It won’t be much longer at all, promise." Gwen moaned in reply, tears forming in her eyes but she knew better than cry. Crying wouldn't help the situation now... not that she had any energy or strength left to cry after being stabbed like this. Wolfie kissed Gwen on the forehead and pulled away, taking a deep breath before turning their attention to their surroundings. Esther disappeared, so she won't hurt Gwen again. She hoped they won't need to do something drastic next time... But then again, who knows what could happen... Wolfie turned back to their lover.
"Are you feeling any better?" Wolfie asked, stroking her hair gently.
Gwen shook her head. "Nnnn... I can't feel my legs anymore..."
Wolfie nodded.
"Can you stand up for me?"
Gwen looked up at them. "Hmhmm...." She didn't want to move though; everything hurts.
"Ok. Come here, dear." Wolfie scooped Gwen up into their arms and carefully rocked her side to side. She suddenly turned frantically, trying to look for Esther, which caused lots of pain.
"Darling, darling, careful. You're bandaged right now, it'll rip."
"W..where.. where is.." Gwen stuttered.
"She's gone now, so you're safe. Your mother is a whore, isn't she?" Wolfie said, chuckling quietly. Gwen laughed aswell, but quickly whimpered in pain. Wolfie planted a small kiss on Gwen's head and carefully sat on the couch, leaning her head on their lap. They smiled at her tired expression. "Are you feeling better?" They asked softly.
"Yes." She took a deep breath, trying to clear her mind. "Thank you for taking care of me," she said in a low voice.
"Of course I will. Anything for you." They kissed her head again. "Now, are we going to continue watching your favorite shows or do you want me to call for more soup?" They were holding a large bowl filled with chicken noodle soup that Wolfie had heated up while Gwen was resting on the couch.
She sighed. "No, no more soup. Just let me stay like this." They chuckled, petting her hair.
Gwen closed her eyes, snuggling deeper into Wolfie's lap. The TV was still on but neither of them really cared. They both just enjoyed each other's company and the comfort of being together.
"Wolfie.." Gwen mumbled quietly. Wolfie looked down at her, worried that she was hurt or upset.
"Whats up dear?"
"Why are my feet cold?" Gwen asked, which made Wolfie start laughing. After calming down, they responded,
"I'm not sure, Gwen. It's one of those things that happen without explanation."
"So it's like when you were chosen to watch over me?" She asked
Wolfie nodded. "Like when I was chosen, yes my dear." Wolfie smiled and leaned forward to kiss Gwen's forehead, who then wriggled in happiness. They kissed her nose and she giggled.
"That tickles!" She squealed.
"Yeah, but I can't stop." Wolfie replied, grinning like a fool. It wasn't that they were afraid of kissing Gwen or anything. They just... they couldn't get enough of her. Her soft curls, her sweet smell, the way she looked at them with innocent eyes when she was happy, her adorable little nose scrunching up when she laughed – it made their heart beat faster just by looking at her.
They were completely smitten.
Gwen giggled again and wrapped an arm around Wolfie, hugging them. The two sat there for a while in silence. Gwen snuggled into his side until her breathing evened out. Wolfie smiled and continued playing with her hair.
