"He's late," I muttered to myself as I fiddled with the fork on the table in front of me. The restaurant was almost full, soft classical music playing in the background. Everyone seemed happy, chatting and laughing with whoever they were sat with- I didn't fit in there. I had a feeling in my stomach that Spencer had invited me here for a reason, and not the good kind.
Lately, he had been... strange.
Whenever I told him I loved him, he hesitated in saying it back. Whenever I would offer to make dinner, he insisted on doing it himself. Something was off, and I was not convinced that he was himself.
I looked up from the table and saw Spencer waking towards me with a slight smile on his face. He wore a suit, which I found odd. No sweater vest, no coloured shirt, just a normal suit. I stood up to greet him and forced a smile, wrapping him up in a short embrace. "Hey sweetie," I said, sounding as sweet as possible.
"Hey," he replied. He pecked my cheek before sitting down and instantly pulling his phone out. I caught a glimpse of the screen; he was texting Derek.
Derek: How you feelin?
Not so good. I don't know how she's going to react.
Derek: Just breathe, kid. It'll be fine.
I looked up to see the waiter approaching our table. He greeted us with a warm smile and flipped his notepad open. "What can I get you guys this evening?"
Spencer finally looked up from his phone. "I'll have the smoked salmon, please."
"Certainly sir," he then turned to me. "What can I get for you ma'am?"
"I-I'll have the same, please."
"Of course, those will be ready for you soon."
"Thank you." Spencer said as the waiter walked away. He looked into my eyes, and I stared back. I faintly smiled, fearing the worst. "So how was your day?" I asked to fill the silence and, if my fears were correct, delay the dreadful.
"Fine. Yours?"
"Mine was good too. What's with the restaurant tonight? Valentine's Day was a week ago."
His cheeks flushed and he looked down at his hands. "I-I guess I just wanted to go out."
"Oh, okay."
Fifteen minutes of uncomfortable silence and dress sleeve fiddling had passed before our food arrived. We were served two steaming plates of orange salmon with baked potatoes and green beans, and we both started eating as soon as the waiter left us. I was indulging in a fork full of the smoky fish when Spencer broke the silence again. "Y/N, can I ask you something?"
My heart started to pound in my chest. "Anything."
"How have you felt in this relationship lately?"
It felt like my heart had stopped. "I've been so happy. I have never loved a person more- you are what keeps me going. I've been happy for all three years of our relationship, and my feelings for you have never wavered." My eyes started to well up with tears, but I fought them.
He sighed. "Listen, there's something I want you to know."
My breath caught in my throat and the tears in my eyes won the battle, running down my cheeks. "You don't love me anymore, do you?"
Spencer's face dropped as he stood up. "What?"
"You've been strange lately. I didn't know what was going on with you, but I figured it out. You don't love me anymore."
To my surprise, he looked heartbroken.
He grabbed my hand and pulled me up, wrapping me up in a tight embrace, not caring who saw. "Don't ever say that, okay?" He said, not letting go. He buried his face in my shoulder, and I squeezed him tightly. When we finally let go, I noticed he had left a wet patch on my shoulder from his tears. "I have loved you every single day since I've known you." He put one hand in his pocket. "Which leads me onto this."
Then he knelt down on one knee, and my hand flew to my mouth.
"Y/N," he managed through tears, "You are the light of my life, the candle in my darkness. Your smile is like a breath of fresh air, and your entire being makes me feel like life is worth living. I can't promise you the world, but I can promise you that I will always be by your side, supporting and encouraging you every step of the way."
My legs almost gave way, slightly shaking with an array of emotions. "Spencer, I don't need you to promise me the world," I said, my voice trembling. "I already have it right in front of me."
Spencer smiled, wide and toothy, and pulled a small velvet box out of his pocket. He held it in front of him and opened it to reveal the most beautiful ring I had ever seen- a band of silver with a radiant aquamarine stone in the centre. "Y/N Y/L/N, will you marry me?"
"Yes!" I almost shouted. His eyes widened as his smile grew. He held out my hand and slid the ring on my wedding finger. He stood up, wrapping his arms around me, picking me up and spinning me around with exclamations of joy. He set me down, and my lips met his in a sweet but powerful kiss. "I love you so much," he laughed excitedly, our foreheads resting on eachother's.
"I love you too, sweetness. So, what do you say we go home and celebrate?"
"Absolutely."
And with that, we headed for the door hand in hand, the applause of people in the restaurant fading as we passed.
"How do you want to celebrate?"
A smirk formed on my face as I thought about my answer. "I can think of a few ways."
A/N: Hey peeps! I have to say, this one don't my favourite, but I still like it. Should I make a smutty part two? 🤔 Lemme know!
All the love,
RJ💕
