I stared at my reflection for a few moments. My eyes sat still for a few moments, fixated on the bags under my eyes; I didn't get much sleep as night as I was worrying about starting my new job here in LA. I took out my cream and applicator and applied it onto my under eyes and then applied light concealer to make me look more alive. I kept biting my lips because I was nervous causing my my lipgloss to smudge. My anxiety was going through the roof but I couldn't stop and the best part? I hadn't even stepped outside yet.
"Maya? Where have you gone?" I hear the voice of my best friend Nathan from my phone.
"U-uh yeah um I'm here," I replied, clearing my voice and diverting my eyes to my FaceTime call with Nathan. He was still in bed and honestly where I wished I was right now, rather then about to head out to a new job in a state I have no sense of direction in.
The idea of being in an unknown territory makes me feel weird, I don't like new but I'm going to have to get used to it if I want to be successful; and it was blatantly obvious that Nathan pick up on how I felt.
"Maya, you will be fine. Now please, for the love of God stop stressing and get your ass to work before you are late!" Nathan said rolling his eyes at me, "I've got to go back to sleep" he says wining. I roll my eyes at him and say goodbye as I walk out my apartment door.
Okay Maya, you've got this. Just breathe. You can do this.
I sighed deeply, picking up my pace trying to ignore the noises and people around me. I had already noticed a huge difference from living here in California in comparison to Maine; I honestly don't know if I could ever get used to this, but for the sake of my job - I have to. I have previously worked at Olsen Industries for a few years now just in a smaller firm in Maine and had recently been promoted , which entailed me having to leave my life as I knew it behind snd coming here. But I really need the money. So what other choice did I have then to take up the offer?
"Hey watch it!"
Too late. I stumbled forward, lost in my thoughts, colliding with a young man holding a coffee cup I presume. Since that what looked like was spilled all over my blouse.
I gasped and looked down at my new shirt. My first day at work and it is already a disaster. I tried to blink back the sting in my eyes from both the burn of the hot coffee and the overall embarrassment.
"Oops, sorry darling," the man says hastily. He was barely even looking at me and was off again, moving on with his life as if what just happened didn't occur. I mean, what did I expect him to do? I got back up on my feet checking the time, clutching my bag tightly in my knuckles I could feel my anxiety getting worse and my breathing becoming shallow.
Just breathe Maya. Deep Breaths
"You're late. On your first day too."
I had just entered Olsen Industries. It was a huge building complex which was not surprised to say the least since this was the headquarters. It stood so majestic and I was already intimidated staring at it from outside. Now the intimidation I was feeling seemed to have multiplied by twenty as I stood trembling in my heels.
A brunette woman with her hair tied half back in a clip stared at me with deep brown eyes. She had a frown etched into her face and had stacks of paper in her hands.
"I'm sorry,' my voice came out in quick breathes, "I experienced a slight inconvenience on my way here.."
My mind slowly wondered back to the man who had spilled coffee down my blouse and how I had to stop in a public bathroom to try get the stain off my shirt. It was still apparent, but not as obvious as before. After missing my bus, I had to wait fifteen minutes for the next one and had to practically run the rest of the way to work. My feet were killing me to say the least.
