I dread the halls of my school
Filled with teenager after teenager
I watch as they carelessly bump into each other
As they hug and squeal in delight
Punch each other and pat each other on the backs
They touch each other so freely
Not even thinking about it
Meanwhile I press against the wall and wait for the halls to clear
Before, finally, I make my way to my next class
I'm not allowed to touch anyone
No hugging, no hand shaking, no brush of a shoulder
Nothing
Or else someone will end up dead
And yet another body will be added to my list
And a new name awarded to my face
And another location that I must wipe from my memory
I hold back tears as I reach my next class
And the stares of my peers settle on me
"Why are you late this time?"
Miss Buroughs asks, adjusting her glasses
"Locker."
I mumble, a blush of shame engulfing my face
"Detention."
Is her choice of punishment
"I can't."
"Why not?"
I force an arrogant grin
"I have detention with four other teachers already."
All for being late
