We made our way home after our purchase. Declan held my hand as he guided me back. Nicholas had left to go home.
We stepped onto the porch as the guest exited the front door. They gave us a nod as they disappeared into the dark.
We entered the house to see Mr. and Mrs. Thompson chatting in the kitchen. I handed Declan the ice-cream and he told them good night before heading upstairs. I entered kitchen for some spoons.
I noticed a folder on the counter. I got curious as to what it was and walked closer. Mr. Thompson hurriedly picked it up and left. He was fast but not fast enough. Before he could leave, I saw my name on it in all caps ‘Moya Cannon.’
I looked at them shocked before grabbing the spoons and leaving. Why would they have a folder with my name on it? How long have they had it. I could feel my heart beating out of my chest.
I ran to his room. I barged through the door. He laid on his bed with the ice-cream container on a blanket. He looked up at me in concern. “Are you ok?” His voice was so quiet and reassuring.
I wanted to run into his arms and allow him to comfort me, but could I trust him? Maybe he knew about the folder.
He sat up in the bed.
I felt so scared. My hands started to tremble. Why did they have a folder with my name on it. How did they know my full name? I never told it to them. What are they doing with my information.
I heard his footsteps getting closer. I looked up but my vision was blurry. My face was wet. I was crying. I wiped the tears and others came to take their place. They’ve been lying to me but for what?
I felt like I was being used. Was the dinner a test? I thought it was just a little get to know each other but what would they want to know if they already have my file. What’s the point of everything.
I felt his arms wrapped around me. He rested his chin on my head as he rocked up from side to side. He ran his hands through my hair as I listened to the beating of his heart.
I was being used once again. I was nothing but a pawn in their little game. I will not allow for it to happen. I had to calm down. I had to play it safe. I needed more information. I won’t be a pawn in this game for no longer.
“You wanna tell me what happened?” We hadn’t shifted from our position. He still had his hands around me as mine stayed firmly at my sides.
“I saw something.” I had to think of something. I can’t let them.
“What did you see?” He tensed up. His grip tightened.
I remembered back to the time I saw those eyes outside the window staring at me. “A pair of bright red glowing eyes were outside. It was so scary.”
His hands froze in my hair. His heartbeat got faster. He was quiet for a while. He was zooned out and I feared disturbing him.
He suddenly pulled me towards the bed. He laid me down in front of him as he continued playing in my hair. “Don’t worry. Someone will be going investigate it.”
I laid there, waiting for him to get up and report it but he never did. He said someone will be going to investigate but he hasn’t told anyone yet.
I nudged him, hoping he would get the point. He made no movement. I nudged him again; he made a sound. “Declan, aren’t you going to tell them?”
“I umm I’m going to.” He rolls over and aims for the table drawer before withdrawing his hands.
He stood and headed towards the door shouting I’ll be back as he left.
I rolled over towards the drawer. I pulled on the handle, but it didn’t budge. It was locked. I needed to find a key. I listened for any sound of footsteps. When I was sure the coast was clear, I started searching the room. The key must be in here somewhere.
I checked the most obvious places. There wasn’t even time to do a deep search. I looked under the bed, on the dresser and in the closet. As I was searching through his clothes, I heard his footsteps returning.
I immediately ran to his bed and pulled the sheets over me.
“Why are you breathing so heavy?” He made his way towards the closet and took out a shorts and t-shirt.
“I was doing some stretching before you entered.” He came towards the bed and wrapped his arms around me.
“I’m going to help my dad explore the area for the culprit.” He kissed my forehead before standing up, “I’ll see you later.”
He left the room, closing the door behind him. The room felt bigger and even darker now that he was gone. I wanted to continue my search, but my body wouldn’t allow me. Today had really taken a toll on me.
Maybe a small rest wouldn’t hurt. I hugged his pillow, breathing in his scent. My body relaxing as my mind succumb to the darkness.

I woke up sometime during the night feeling dehydrated. I looked around the room, there was no sign of Declan’s return. I slowly got up out of bed and headed downstairs.
I poured a cup of water and leaned against the counter. Everything was so quiet. The slightest noise echoed throughout the house.
I placed my cup in the sink and headed for the stairs when I heard a howl from outside. I made my way to the window and looked around. I could barely see anything with the moonlight.
I closed the curtains when I heard scratching. I looked once again and there stood those red eyes staring back at me. I ran upstairs and hid under his covers. I closed my eyes as I listened for any sound but there was none.
I relaxed, cuddled under the sheets, until I fell asleep for good.
