My eyes open to the sound of something close to me moving.
I immediately sit up and get a few daggers from my belt pocket out. I hear the noise again except this time I can tell where it came from; a bush.
I'm about to throw a dagger in the direction of the bush, in case it's one of them, when a familiar person comes into view. I let out a sigh of relief as I clutch my chest tightly, sending him a glare. "You scared the shit out of me Trevor! You should really say when you're about to appear somewhere." I whisper-shout at him as he quietly chuckles. "I was about to throw a dagger at you." That seemed to shut him up.
"You're acting like it's nothing Mai. And why are you smirking?" I was now silently chuckling as he grabbed my shoulders and made me face him. "Don't tell me you're one of them now?" I stop chuckling as I feel all color drain from my face. I think he saw all my playfulness was gone because a look of guilt filled his face. "Shit! Mai, I'm sor--"
"I'm gonna go wake Julie up." I say quietly, grab my backpack with the few belongings I have, put the hood of my sweater on my head, and start to climb a tree.
I hear foot steps approach me when I'm halfway up the tree and then Trevor's voice follows. "Look, Mai," I hear him start to climb the tree, "You know I didn't mean it."
I nod even though he probably can't see. "I know, it's just that after not remembering for so long about...Well about him I just..." I groaned in frustration and sit on a nearby branch.
Trevor does the same. "I know what you mean, you don't have to explain." He answers softly. "You're still hurt," he gently rubs his knuckles over the bruise that hasn't disappeared from my cheekbone. "I get it." He grasps my hand softly and interwines our fingers. "But Mai, it's been months since it happened. And I know just months won't be enough to help you move on but at least...at least try to stop depending your happiness on him."
I feel tears start to form on my eyes. I bite my bottom lip and look at our intertwined hands. "But how?" I ask in a whisper, my voice sounding shaky.
I feel a hand go under my chin, making me look up to find Trevor looking at me with something unreadable in his gaze. "I can help you," he whispers leaning in, "if you let me." His brown eyes never left mine as he closed the space between us and softly kissed me.
And after a while...I kiss him back.
"He doesn't deserve the love you still have for him," he says once he pulls back. "And you didn't deserve what he did to you."
He tucks a strand of my dark hair behind my ear. "Thank you Trevor."
I smile weakly and he returns it with a better smile. "No. Thank you." He starts to climb down. "Now, how about we go wake Jules?"
I nod and start to climb down with him. "Yeah. We should go."
Now, you may be wondering; who are them? Who's him? What did he do to you? Who are you guys?
Well, let me start from the beginning.
My name's Amairany, or Mai for short. And I along with Trevor and Juliana am one of the only humans left on this earth.
