My mom doesn't know where I should go to school at. She's been doing research lately on the topic and has learned that public schools are not the most qualified for teaching me the life skills that I need for my future, however, the schools made especially for the blind and disabled that are near us are too expensive for my family to afford at the moment.
As it is currently summer, I only need to learn how to use a cane and continue my training with Sydney. She knows how to guide me through crowds and obstacles, but without my knowledge of the town and how to navigate the streets, I'm stuck at home and in my backyard.
Except for today. Instead I sit on a swing, slowly rocking like a slow pendulum, to scared to lift my feet from the ground. My mom left me here after I told her I was going to die from boredom after staying at home for so long. I'm still restless. Good to know.
I feel Sydney perk up under my hand. I wish I knew why.
I give myself another push.
The park is quiet today, but then again I've never been here before, so it could be just as quiet everyday. I can hear the birds singing, grass rusting in the wind, and Sydney's fast breathing. Nothing else.
An ominous feeling settles itself into my chest. I feel so...helpless.
Deep into my thoughts, I didn't hear a new sound appear in the park until it was right upon me.
"You okay there, kid?" A voice appears right in front of me. And of course as any other sane normal person would, I scream, and fall backwards.
In the chaos of my fall, my glasses fall off, exposing my eyes to the view of the other person trying to help me up.
"Shit, kid!" The person, no, boy spoke again. I feel myself return to a normal sitting position, hands, grasping at the wood chips that cover the ground around the swings as I search for my shades. "Here," he speaks again, as my glasses are pushed into my hands. I put them on quickly, embarrassed.
I'm about to thank him when he speaks, quite quickly at that. "I'm so sorry, my name is Anthony. You must be New! I've never seen you here before, and almost no one comes to this park anymore after the new one was built. And there's no reason to be embarrassed about your eyes. My brother is blind, actually. His name is Julian. Wait! Are you Oliver? You must be! He's told me about you, and your dog!"
"U-um," I try to cut in.
"Oh no! I'm sorry! I get like this when I'm excited or haven't taken my medicine. Shit, I haven't taken my medicine!" Anthony continues.
"Anthony!" Another voice comes into the picture, I turn to it by habit. "You left so quickly, Auntie told me that you forgot your medicine again." That voice...Julian!
"Yeah, well, I was in a rush and then I found this kid and scared him a little! He's okay though, I think. And before you yell, I didn't mean to scare him! It's hard not to sneak up on a daydreaming blind person. You should know!" Anthony started.
Julian shuffled closer. "I don't want to hear it! Go home and take your medicine before Auntie hunts you down!"
I could hear Anthony fidgeting. "Okay... Bye, umm?" Anthony paused.
"Oliver, you had it right when you guessed." I couldn't help but smile at the excitable boy standing above me still.
"Oliver? Oh, Anthony wait a minute!" Julian came closer to me as he called for his brother that already started back towards their home. "Oliver, do you need Anthony to help you back home?"
"No, thank you though," I used one of the swing set's poles to get into a standing position. "My mom is expecting me here."
Julian sniffed. "If you're sure. Anthony go. He spoke to his brother again. I was coming here to spend my afternoon swinging, myself." He moved towards the swing that I was sitting in before. "We can swing together? Get to know each other before our next visit with Dr. Smug."
I smile and find the swing next to him. "He is smug isn't he?"
He smiles back, I could feel it against the side of my face as he looked towards me.
A/N I hate dialogue.
hoped you all enjoyed this chapter, if you would like me to continue this particular story please say so, because I'll probably abandon it if I get no feed back.I wrote this two or three years ago, but I decided to post it now as I just found it after logging into Wattpad for the first time in a year or two. I still have ideas for this story, and I'm rebuilding the plot for it, so please read, comment and vote!!!
