First story I'm publishing. It's been in my head for a little over a year now, so I'm finially writing it down. However, I'm a teacher, mother of two, and I have a second job. So I won't be updating regularly. And I won't be doing a ton of "authors notes" either. I find them a bit annoying as a reader too. Thanks for reading and enjoy!!
-———————————————————Being new to school sucks. Being new to school, when you have only ever done the home school thing, sucks worse. My parents are both born rogues, so we were never in a pack and therefore couldn't go to pack school. And while a human school would teach us the basics, it would also gain us too much attention. Who wouldn't notice kids that learn quicker, run faster and would dominate every single athletic event? So my parents decided to keep us at home and take us on trips. While kids our age learned about plants, my mother created gardens with us, cultivating vegetables, fruits and herbs we would use. When learning about the weather, school kids read, watched movies and colored diagrams, we rode on our parent's wolves backs through rain, visited tornado alley during tornado season, and rode out hurricane Katrina in Louisiana. When they learned about erosion with sand in a pan and a leaky cup, my sister and I got to see the Grand Caynon and walk through its canal.
But for some reason, this year my parents want us going to "regular school" as they call it. We had recently moved because my mom got a new job as a pediatrician and we followed her. Up until now, she only took half-a-day jobs to homeschool us. However, she had contacted a pack close by, explained the situation, and they gave permission for us to attend their school, which catered to both werewolf and human kids. We had the summer to get use to our surroundings before school would start for us. My sister Evelynn and I mostly used it to create a garden in our now tiny back yard. She complained that there wasn't enough room for her herbs, so dad agreed to build her a herb table that would go the length of the window in her room.
All too soon, the summer was over. Mom had taken us to get our school supplies, pencils, pens, binders and journals and we got some new clothes for the school year. I think mom went a little overboard with the clothes, but I wasn't complaining. We got new stuff when we'd normally have hand me downs from goodwill.
We woke up early on the first day to a feast of a breakfast. Dad had pulled out all the stops, cooking pancakes, bacon, sausage, eggs and even squeezing fresh orange juice. After saying bye, Evelynn and I walled the twenty minutes to the school. We had practiced the rout the week before so we knew when we had to leave. We got to the school early enough to used the schedules that came in the mail weeks before to find our classes together. We got some looks from other wolves in the hallways, mostly distrusting glares and looks of disgust, but I could care less.
"Is it just me, or are we the center of attention here?" Evelynn asked me.
"Nah, I was thinking the same thing. Must be because we look fantastic in the new gear mom got us." I elbow bumped her smiling. She smiled back half-heartedly, knowing that wasn't the reason.
"Don't let anyone get to you today, ok? We're new to the area, there going to look at us funny. And don't try too hard, try to stay out of the pack wolves way. You may make better friends with the humans. Just remember, I'm in the east wing of the school, the jr. high level. Your in the west wing, the elementary level. You only have another year before your in jr. high, so make the most of your only elementary year." I told her, trying to alleviate her fears and remind her how things may go today.
"Thanks Grace. I know how things could go for us, being rogues. Just wish they would get to know us before they judged." Evelynn said, nervously rubbing her feet together. The bell rang, signing us to go to our first class to begin the day. Evelynn hugged me and ran off to her class while I trudged to the East wing. I wasn't exactly thrilled to be here, but since Evelynn seemed enthusiastic I would try.
