It was one of the few times Cecil was sad. Her former employer, Mr. Ramboey, one of the most dedicated and down-to-earth people she had ever known, was stepping down due to his advanced age and responsibilities to his family. He was the only one who had given her a chance to prove herself, had been patient with her and secured her a good place in the company. She would be truly lost without him, and though she would never admit it to him, at least not out loud, she had a deep respect for him. He had been with the company for almost two years, and in those two years they must have exchanged less than a hundred and fifty words, most of which were hellos and goodbyes, but that does not mean they didn't have a deep respect for each other. The reception was really successful. A real band playing beautiful jazz songs, countless elegantly decorated tables, beautiful dresses and costumes as far as the eye can see, selected wines and dishes. Everything was up to par. She herself was feeling great in her long raven black dress and champagne in hand. Like a true socialite.
Tonight, she intended to be a little bolder than usual and say a proper last goodbye to Mr. Rambozey. She was waiting for a long time the moment when all the others would finally line up with teary eyes and farewell "speeches". There were so many people present that the evening passed, but still the long-awaited moment never came, so she just decided to approach. One of her colleagues had stuck to the gentleman, saying "oh, you have no idea how much we'll miss you. No one will replace you...", so Cecile decided to give her that chilling look of hers, which immediately embarrassed her:
"Well, excuse me Mr. Rambozey, but I think I've taken up enough of your time. We will miss you very much though. Don't forget to visit us from time to time. Excuse me."
When she finally moved away Mr. Rambozey whispered conspiratorially with a cheerful smile:
"Many thanks!" - And for the first time tonight, he made her show her shy and because of the occasion slightly sad smile.
"In principle, I hardly agree with her, but we will really miss you."
"Yes, but old dogs are easily forgotten. I've found a worthy replacement, you'll get used to it and you won't even remember the old Rambozey ever existed."
She was very curious as to who would be in her boss's place, because many things depended on
that. Her main strategy was to keep a low profile and go about her business as before, but she was still eager to learn more.
"You never told us anything more about your future deputy."
"Why should I do that? He is willing to introduce himself, and even so you will form your own first impression and opinion of him. Why would i confuse you with my judgment?"
There was a short pause, and then Mr. Rambozey said:
"Well, it's getting late." - He put his glass of champagne aside and said: - "You have a future, although I must admit I didn't pay much attention to you, but I could see that you were doing a good job. If you continue in the same vein, you shouldn't have any problems. So, head up!" - held out his hand for one last goodbye. - "It was a pleasure, Miss Melponte!"
"I was honored Mr. Rambozey!"
And so, he walked away, and she stared at him until he vanished from her sight. Her heart sank for a moment, for a long moment.
