The fact that Cecile Melponte had been born in a small, poor province in Italy, where the birth of another mouth to feed was not much of an event, made her nondescript and ordinary. She was the fifth child in the Melponte family, who, apart from being unwanted by her parents, had appeared in this world under rather unfavorable conditions during the repressions in Italy or as everyone called it "the second greatest famine after the second world war". When it came to her birth, her mother always liked to relate it in that careless, simple tone of hers and vulgar words that Cecil detested, as if it were a calf rather than her own child:
"It was in the middle of a winter night. I've been freezing all night among the stone loads of the fucking hospital, shivering in pain, and on top of that, she'd decided to go out on her ass."
Normally, Cecil would just cover her ears to avoid hearing about the damn day she'd been born. She was quite different and well aware of it but being different in her world was not an advantage, on the contrary, everyone avoided her, thinking she was strange. Some even, whether in jest or if they really meant it, called her a witch or a devil's bastard because she was so shy that she hardly spoke. She could certainly feel the cringe in others when they saw her, but it wasn't so bad because it had often saved her from being bullied at school. Somehow, she managed to scare the other kids she thought because of the chilling look she gave them.
As for her family, they barely got by during the famine thanks to theft and fraud. Her father was a merchant, he had a stall in the market that was mostly for fruits and vegetables, but everyone knew that he secretly sold alcohol and cigarettes, and at quite a high price. Her mother more often than not begged on the streets, taking advantage of people's pity, getting pregnant on purpose again and again, and it was the job of her, her sisters and brothers (six children in total) to steal what they could. Cecil didn't beat her at all in stealing like the others. She was constantly picked on and teased, and if she didn't bring anything home, her family did. On the other hand, her oldest sister Zina was the best at it and therefore the most loved in the family. You have no idea how much Cecil hated his sister and her snark. She had never felt such hatred for another human being but her. Most of the time, Zina just despised her and pretended she didn't exist, but she knew well that Cecil was always in her shadow and paled in comparison to her power. That was exactly why Cecil hated her so much. Because she was stronger than her. But in one thing Cecil would always be better than her and everyone else. In school. Cecil was one of those kids who didn't give a damn and yet excelled, and although no one cared, she was the only one who was proud of it. With herself.
