The Key

Dad could tell the time exactly because he had his iphone. He said that he wasn’t able to call anyone due to no phone or power lines. I understood that fairly clearly. I stayed quiet for a little bit but then I just felt tired and restless. It was 6:45 pm when we found another clearing up the path to rest at. I stayed in the middle of the meadow clearing petting Meow who I put out on the warm grass. It was starting to get chillier and darker out. I took off my jacket and wrapped up Meow in it. Dad was over on the edge of the meadow picking more berries and piling them up in the hood of his jacket. He had on a slightly warmer jacket then me. I told him that I was going to look down the path just a little ways to see of there was anyone walking along. I left sleeping Meow in the grass and looked out down the pathway in both directions. No one. I noticed something glittering in the middle of the path though. It looked silver, slightly large, and looked like it had a handle. I went up to see what it was and saw that it was a key. I was in astonishment as to what the key went to. It went to our house! I didn’t pick it up but I went back to Dad as fast as I could run and told him that Mom and Kalvin must be near!

“Mom and Kalvin must be near,” I exclaimed in excitement.

“How do you know? Did you see them? Did you hear one of them?”

“I found our house key out in the middle of the path. That has to stand for something... doesn’t it?!”

“Well, maybe. Let’s go get it,” he replied as we started walking towards Meow and the opening of the meadow. I grabbed Meowgy and cuddled him in my arms while he was still sleeping. I directed Dad to where I saw the key. It was still in the middle of the path and he picked it up.

“It is our house key! You were right. They must be close now!” he exclaimed.

“Well then, let’s go down the pathway and look!” I replied with hope, excitement, and joy all in my voice.
