The Soft Moss

Breathing in slowly I can smell the warm moss underneath and all around my head. Rays of sunshine dance on my body as I'm lying on the ground. I receive such healing from this simple ritual; being here in the warmth of the sunshine, listening to the Forrest rustle with life, feeling the bed of moss underneath me and soaking it all in.
I focus on the sounds and slowly drift away into a meditative state.

"What? Water?!"
I felt one of my toes suddenly become wet taking me out of my heavily relaxed state of mind. Being slightly fearful to look for the cause I slowly squinted and began to open my eyes..

As I look down I can see an opossum nudging my foot with its wet nose. I flinch to see a living thing so close to me without my knowledge which causes the opossum to do the same. "Oh its alright, forgive me" I apologize quickly in a calm soft voice.
The little ball of fuzz just gazes at me with an inquisitive look, and after a long pause it continues to nudge at my toes as if it were to shake berries from a bush.

"Arlisia come back in for food my dear" I hear my mother calling from the cottage. The little opossum waddled away in a slightly hurried fashion as if embarrassed to be a hindrance to me and my obligations. As I stand to my feet and call out "Hey! Hey." I see it turn it's head around in response "It's okay" I looked into the creatures eyes and saw.. understanding? I stood on my bare feet and we both walked our separate ways. Heading back to the cottage I picked up sticks and any piece of recently fallen wood I could find as I walked.

It was difficult at times. Just my mother and I living together tucked into the side of this cliff. We had to use the time we had wisely and efficiency. Never miss an opportunity to help ourselves live better. Even though it felt like we weren't living at all at times.
