Randall sat in bed, reading a book Angela had gifted him. The lamp on the desk beside him tinted the room in a cozy amber light, and the thick blanket he wrapped himself in comforted him with its warmth. He was alone in his room, exhausted after a long day of celebration. Sure, it wasn't the grandest, but he still used up most of his energy during the wonderfully simple little birthday party his partners had put on. The two of them planned everything out, from decorating the living room to baking a cake to inviting his closest friend, Henry, and honorary brother-in-law, Desmond. The whole thing was a surprise celebration, and he could not have been happier.
His mind ceased focusing on what he was reading and instead trailed on to memories of that delightful day, but his train of thought was soon stopped by a soft knocking on his open door.
Without even facing it, he knew who was there.
There's only one person who's that gentle.
Hershel stood in the doorway, clearly just as tired as his boyfriend. With the exception of his hat being slightly askew, his clothes were just as neat as they've always been, but his face and body had little energy left in them, just enough for him to quietly ask if it was okay to enter.
Randall gestured for him to come in, shifting slightly to make some room on the bed and patting the vacant spot. Hershel sat down just as Randall said, "You know, you don't need to ask if you could join me. You could just barge right in and I wouldn't mind in the slightest."
"I know," he replied, his voice nearly a whisper, "but I figured it'd be the polite thing to do. Besides, I didn't want to startle you or intrude on your reading."
"It's ok, I was spacing out anyway." Using the removable cover to bookmark his page, Randall set the book on the nightstand and turned his full attention to his boyfriend. "You're really committed to this whole 'gentleman' thing, huh?" he teased.
The two of them burst out laughing, not noticing Angela walk in. "You boys having fun?" she joked, crossing her arms with a tired smile on her face. Randall nodded, still giggling. She sat at the foot of the bed and turned to face them.
"Oh, by the way," Randall started before she could speak, "thank you both for all you did for me."
"It was nothing," Hershel replied.
"No, really. I know it wasn't, like, a lot a lot, but you both put a lot of effort into it, and it still means the world to me. So, thank you."
Angela's eyes-closed grin was simply radiant, and Hershel's timid smile was simply adorable.
How did I ever get so lucky?
On impulse, Randall pulled his partners in for a big hug, one that, despite taking them by surprise, they all stayed in for a long moment, enjoying each others' comforting embrace. Perhaps it was their sleepiness that allowed them to just forget about the seconds ticking away, marking just how long they stayed in each others' arms, or perhaps it was simply the celebratory mood that made them feel like this was the perfect way to end the day. None of them were sure.
The three of them managed to fall asleep in that hug.
And that marked the best day of Randall's life.
