Children who were also captured at the end of the war and didn't succumb to the malnutrition, abuse, or disease unfortunately grew up only ever knowing the harsh reality of life in the work camps, forgetting that there ever was a life outside the camps. Eventually there were even some children who were born into the camps. Kyosei however was different. He was the eldest son of the late Southern Water Tribe Chief, who had been in hiding along with the last remaining members of her tribe. Although he had been the strongest bender in his tribe second only to his mother, the chief, he was the last waterbender and only one left alive from his tribe. Kyosei was captured at age 15, after his mother sacrificed herself in an attempt to buy him some time to escape, and was brought to the nearest work camp in the Land of Fire. He had been there for nearly ten years yet he refused to become beaten down and continued to be recalcitrant even if it only worsened his punishments. Kyosei refused to give up, he swore that one day he would escape that torturous hell hole. And when he did, he was going to wipe out the whole camp and the ninja guards in the biggest wave he could manage.

There were all kinds of benders there from all over the map. The camp was far from any water sources, made of metal and hotter than you could imagine as it rarely rained in this region of the Land of Fire. Guards didn't even bother to divide up the prisoners, they just shoved as many as they could into each holding cell. It was very rare for this camp to receive new prisoners, in fact Kyosei had been one of the last prisoners to arrive ten years ago and was lucky enough to have the cell to himself. To his surprise, behind him the gate to his holding cell swung open with a harsh, piercing squeal of the rusty hinges. A shockingly thin girl was quickly shoved inside. She fell to the ground, unable to support her own body and unconscious as they slammed the gate closed again.

The girl remained unconscious for hours. And then days passed. Still no sign of her waking up anytime soon. Kyosei tried to use his healing abilities to help revive the girl but without any water there was little he could do. Kyosei studied her features as she slept and decided that she had to be around his age. Although she was unconscious, she wore a most serious frown, her face almost twisted in...anger? pain? He wasn't sure what exactly the cause was but he was sure that she was going to make it, he was sure that she'd wake up.

Eventually she began to stir, then slowly came to.

Her eyes fluttered open with the serious frown remaining. She sat up quickly, too quickly, causing her to see black spots in her vision. Slowly she crawled to the locked gate and began to weakly yank on the gate with all the strength she could muster up. This achieved nothing. Out of what Kyosei assumed was rage or perhaps sadness, the girl begins to scream, yell and even cry at the passing guards, who only laughed at her despair in return. Kyosei could only watch as she continued to waste her energy.

"It wont work, you think I haven't tried that?" he asked her in a soft voice.

She ignored him and continued to pull at the gate and its lock. He watched her in silence from the back corner of the cell. The girl pulled and pulled until she no longer had the energy to move. She sank back down to the cold metal floor and pulled her legs to her chest.

"So.....what's your name? I'm Kyosei..." he attempted, she ignored.

"Helllooooo, can you hear me? We're gonna be here a while, might as well try to get along."  She continued to ignore him.

"Ah WHATEVER then!" He let out a frustrated sigh and turned his back to her, laying down on the cold metal floor to go to sleep.

"Rozen," she softly stated. "My name is Rozen."

Days passed, then months. Months turned into years while they continued to learn more and more about each other. Kyosei had felt every second of his imprisonment before, but now that he had Rozen to keep him company, time seemed to pass without him realizing it. When they weren't out being forced to work, they would tell stories about their life before the camp. Kyosei bragged about how she was lucky to be in the presence of the Southern Water tribe Chief, though he hardly looked the part being there locked in the same cage she was, but Rozen knew him well enough now to see the lurking sadness behind his piercing blue eyes. So she asked him about it. Hesitantly he told her the truth about his mother and how he arrived at the camp. And in return she finally opened up to tell him about her past and how she came to be there in the same camp.

Rozen came from a very important, powerful clan in her village. For generations on her father's side, her family was the head of the clan and they were treated almost like royalty. That was until her father first met her mother, a beautiful princess of the fire nation named Izu. Rozen's grandparents, the head of the clan at the time, were strongly opposed to their union. Although she was a princess in her land, they considered her inferior and not worthy of their son. Izu loved him so much however that she gladly renounced her title and settled in with him and his family. Even though she was hated by not only the main family but the entire clan, soon she became pregnant with Rozen. Unfortunately Izu passed during childbirth, leaving her husband behind with a newborn who looked just like her with curly raven hair and shining amber eyes. As Rozen grew, it became apparent that she had also inherited her mother's gift of fire bending, and just as Izu was looked down on, Rozen too was cast aside. After years of neglect, at age 17 she packed up her belongings and a few of her mother's most prized possessions and left home. No one tried to stop her, not even her drunkard of a father. She left the village but didn't go too far. In the woods nearby, she found a small shack and made that her new home. Rozen was left unbothered for a few years, until one day she returned from the river to find her father waiting on her front steps for her. He told her how much she was missed, how he couldn't believe how she had grown to look so much like Izu and how he regretted how  she was treated and letting her leave. At first she was hesitant, but she had been longing to hear those words for so long, so she believed him and went back to the village with him. Before they made it back to the village, a group of ninja intercepted them. They detained her, but before they drug her away, she watched as one of the ninja handed a sack of coins over to her father. She had been deceived by his lies, he never cared about her. He sold her to ninja from the work camps for simply being born a bender.
