I stepped out into the hallway and began walking in the direction of the council chamber. The meeting wouldn't begin for a while yet, but I preferred to be too early rather than too late. One never knew what might happen on the way and cause a delay.
Just like today. About halfway there, I spotted my oldest brother and his wife outside the door to their chambers. They appeared to be arguing. Curious but not surprised, I snuck closer to hear what they were in such violent disagreement about this time.
"What do you want me to do?", Robert huffed, raising his hands in an exasperated gesture. "Give him a bashing?"
"No", Cersei replied emphatically, visibly shocked at the suggestion. "I only want you to fulfil your duties as a father and teach him. He doesn't listen to me, and it's no wonder, given that he's never had a father figure bothering to care about him in his life."
Robert's lip was trembling with anger. "Careful now. It's not my fault you couldn't raise the boy right. Aren't you women supposed to be good at that?"
Cersei scoffed. "You know, for all the times you speak of claiming your rights as a husband, you are remarkably ignorant of what it means to be a husband."
Those had been the wrong words. My brother's hand closed around Cersei's slim throat and he shoved her against the wall. She did not make a sound, but although she tried to hide it, the fear slowly replacing the scorn in her eyes was visible even from a distance. There was no telling what Robert would do when he was this enraged. "You were saying?", he growled. Cersei remained wisely quiet.
But I would not. She did not deserve to have to endure this. In moments like these, I felt ashamed to even call this man my brother. So as he went on, I stepped in.
"...That's what I thought. You do not lecture me on-"
"Robert, what in the Seven Hells?!" I pushed him away from Cersei with all my strength and wrapped my arm around her shoulders protectively.
He only glared at me in fury, seething but not responding.
"Are you alright?", I asked Cersei, inspecting the white and red marks Robert's fingers had left on her neck. They would likely bruise. She nodded softly and I rubbed her arm reassuringly before turning back to Robert. "We'll talk about this. Now."
My brother followed me into the empty room, staring daggers at me all along, which I returned.
"What do you think you were doing out there?", I asked with quiet calm.
"I was only- you heard how she was talking to me!"
"Would you want my husband to treat me like that?", I inquired pointedly.
"You don't have a husband."
"And seeing you, I'm glad of it."
His jaw twitched as though he was about to say something, but he remained silent.
