"Well we have to let him in!" Isabelle shouted back at Magnus. "I mean, it's Alec!"

"Yeah, well, it's not just Alec." Magnus sighed, running his hands through his hair. "It's Kara and Ben too."

Jace clenched his fists from his spot on the bed. "Did they force him here? Did they drag him here? What did they do to him? Whatever they did, I will kill them." Isabelle didn't doubt for one second that he wouldn't.

Magnus shook his head sadly. "He's standing there with them. Like, willingly."

"By the Angel," Clary whispered, she'd been so quiet Isabelle had almost forgotten about her.

"Well someone has to let him in." Simon said.

"How about you since you had that oh-so-brilliant idea." Jace bit out, his anger at Kara and Ben accidentally being directed at Simon.

"Fine." Simon said, sighing before he stood up and walked over to the door. Just as he was about to leave, Magnus grabbed his arm and stopped him.

"Hey," he whispered, low enough that only Simon would hear. "If Alec...if Alec asks for me, I want to talk to him, okay?"

"Course." Simon said, leaving the room right after Magnus said a quick thank you.

The whole way to the front door of the Institute Simon's brain was running in circles. What was he going to say to Alec? To Kara? To Ben? To the people who were ruining him and his friends lives?

Magnus worridly tapped his foot, his brain playing through thousands of scenerios. None of them were good, either, Magnus' brain always seemed to come up with the worst stuff when he was scared. And Magnus was scared.

Simon wondered why the sent him. He didn't want to open the door and see a harsh, cold Alec saying things he would have never said before. Sure, Alec and Simon had never been close but Alec meant a lot to Isabelle, and Isabelle meant a lot to Simon.

Magnus thought about that infamous quote "if you love it, let it go." Magnus hated that quote. What kind of thing was that to say? He understood that he shouldn't force someone against their will - but letting go? Never. Magnus knew that when he saw Alec if wouldn't be the Alec he knew, but that didn't mean he should let him go. He needed go hold on to him instead, hold on until he came back.

Simon reached the door, and he could see Kara and Ben behind it, small and short under Alec, who wasn't tied up, wasn't being held down, wasn't fighting, an Alec who was just standing there. Simon took a deep breath and slowly opened the door.

Kara and Ben stopped chatting and Alec looked over, a puzzled expression on his face as if he was trying to remember who Simon was and how he felt about him. Apparently whatever he found didn't matter to him, because Alec just turned to Simon and asked him a question.

"Can we come in?"

Simon hesitated before answering. "Why?"

"We'd like to speak to everyone who stays here." Alec said. Simon noticed how he said we and not me and how Kara and Ben said nothing, like they were trusting Alec to say all the right things.

"About what?" Simon knew he had to pick his words carefully, and he didn't want to grill them but he did need to know.

"Look, uh, Simon," Alec paused, like he wasn't sure if that was the right name. "We just want to talk,"

Something in Alec's eyes said that yes, they wanted to talk, and yes, they weren't going to hurt anyone. At least - Alec looked like he fully believed that.

Simon opened the door wide to let them come in. "Who would you like to see?" He asked, watching the three of them file into the Institute.

Kara spoke, surprising them all. "We'll talk to everyone peacefully, I want no weapons."

"No weapons?" Simon didn't like that idea. "Everyone."

"No weapons." Kara said firmly, and Simon heard the words hidden underneath it. If there's weapons you'll regret it. "And everyone that is here right now."

"Except Magnus." Alec said, something flickering across his face. What emotion was that? It wasn't love...of hate...more like, curiosity? "I want to talk to Magnus."

Simon remembered Magnus' word's. He wanted to talk to Alec. Everyone else though, Simon included, he wasn't sure if they were up for talking to Kara and Ben, without weapons. "Right this way." Simon said, feeling like some sort of tour guide as the three of them followed Simon back to the Infirmary where Jace had been healed and everyone else was most likely waiting anxiously.

The walk was terrible, pressing on all of Simon's nerves. He could hear Kara whispering to Ben, her hair sweeping in front of their faces to block the noise. Alec walked in silence, but the one time Simon looked back at him, he looked like he was struggling with memories, like they were rushing in on him as he walked through his home - and he didn't know how to react.

Simon finally reached the door, his hand paused on the handle. He turned back to look at them. "Alec," Simon felt weird calling him that, since it didn't really seem like Alec. "stay here, I'll send Magnus out."

Alec just nodded, seemingly lost in thought. Simon prepared himself for the reaction when he walked into a room full of shadowhunters with Kara and Ben, who they wanted to kill. Simon stepped in, and the reaction was immediate.

Jace sat up in bed, Isabelle pressed one hand on his chest to keep him down and the other on her whip at her side. Clary and Magnus both jumped out of their seats, Clary with a weapon in her hands, and Magnus with a question in his eyes. Where's Alec?

Simon held out his hands, pushing Kara and Ben back against the closed door. "Woah, woah, woah." He said. "They just want to talk to us."
