General Ozi took a slow deep breath before he dialed Burns. Burns was gravely silent as he learned of the incident this morning.
There was a long silent pause before Burns asked "... And he's still alive?"
"For now. You have Y/n to thank for that. Do you want to tell Frank or should I?"
Burns dropped his head into his hand as he let out a gruff exhale. "Let her tell Frank."
"Fine. Is Konro still at the hotel?"
"Shit..." The last thing Burns wanted was to be that messenger. He twisted the handle of his hotel room door and hung up.
Burns didn't know what to say, he just offered to drive Konro back to the 7th. The drive was silent before he dropped Konro at the border. At your garden.
He called into your vacant house, let himself in, searched it... nothing. He moved quickly through the market, ignoring the friendly greetings in his concerned focus, but one conversation did catch his attention:
Akio shook his head. "You're wrong. She's such a kind person. This isn't her fault-"
"I'm just saying, there didn't used to be so much trouble in Asakusa. Since she's moved here, we've had that white clad attack, and now empire officials bust in and destroy the guardhouse. That foreigner's brought nothing but trouble."
Konro grabbed the man by his shirt and shoved him against the wall. "What did you say?"
"Oh- She have you by the balls too, Lieutenant? You've always had a thing for foreigners. The chief would be-"
"You son of a-"
"Chief Shinmon is dead, Takahashi." Gaku interrupted from behind Konro. "If you want to continue to live under Konro and Benimaru's protection, I suggest you abide by their rule over that of a dead man."
"She's dragging all of us into empire shit that has nothing to do with us! The Chief would have never put some woman above the needs and safety of Asakusa."
Gaku scoffed. "Shows what you know about the Chief. He would've let all of you burn if it saved his wife." He crossed his now muscular arms across his broad chest and leaned against the wall Konro still held Takahashi against. "Honestly, you're all lucky. Beni's apathy, which you all encouraged for years by the way, was much more a danger to this town than the level head he gains out of concern for his partner. You're lucky he found something to give a shit about."
"He gives a shit about-"
"Oh and to be clear." Gaku interrupted. "These events you blame her for... Benimaru and I shoulder that blame, not her. He was bored one night and broke into the palace. The emperor can't take that out on him, so he takes it out on her, to hurt him. Tried to take it out on Konro yesterday too."
Takahashi's expression fell as he looked back to Konro, but as he couldn't admit he was wrong, he instead spat "I don't have to take this from an imperial dog."
"Retired imperial dog." Gaku corrected. "And you're right. You don't. But trust me, it's much better for you to have this conversation with me than with the captain."
Konro released him and he walked off. Akio said quietly. "I'm sorry all this is happening, Lieutenant."
Konro nodded slowly to Akio to dismiss him, before he directed his attention to Gaku.
Gaku shook his head. "He's the second one today that I've heard. Gossip sure travels fast."
"What the fuck happened to you?" Konro asked, his residual anger poorly shrouded. Gaku now stood at his height.
