The first few hours of their fight home was silent, until Azula sat down in the large leather seat across from Shay. "I get that it's been a tense day, but you've never been this quiet for as long as I've known you."
Shay remained silent.
Azula sighed. "I know it feels like we are bailing, but we are returning with a military this empire can't even imagine. She'll be just fine in the meantime."
"You're insufferably optimistic sometimes, Azula."
"I promise you on my life. She is fine. She will be fine. Gaku's got her covered when Beni-" Azula's phone buzzed in her pocket and as she read the small screen, she pursed her lips.
"I think you need to tell me quite a bit more about your old friend Gaku-"
"Benimaru proposed." Azula interrupted. "She'll officially be a Shinmon."
Worry melted away from Shay's face. "Really?? Oh! Our military will love that. We'll plan a whole wedding feast for when we all return to Tokyo- why don't you look excited?"
"Because I'm not as much of a hopeless romantic as you." Azula lied.
"Never too late to convert. How was your night?" Shay asked, her mood lifted.
Azula rolled her eyes "He's a brute."
Shay raised an eyebrow and kept her gaze fixed on her guard.
"It was great." Azula begrudgingly admitted.
"Mhmm. That's what I thought. You gonna do it again when we get back?"
Azula would never admit just how badly she wished to repeat her evening with Captain Obi, this time without the morning interruption.
------------
"Konro. Please stop apologizing." You handed him another wet dish to dry.
His eyes caught the glisten of your scar in the wash water. "Y/n, if I'd have been here, this never would have happened." He insisted.
"You would have killed Vic, and we'd have a whole collection of other problems to deal with." Gaku chimed in as he got up from the table. Beni dropped his forehead onto the anatomical diagrams.
"Fine. You want to make it up to me?" Konro's big blue eyes widened at you. "Teach me to make matcha soba noodles."
He looked displeased with that request, as he didn't think it covered his debt.
"Please? It'll give me a break from my new sewing projects while Gaku and Beni are training." Gaku handed you a cup of tea, which you knocked back quickly. "How's he doing?" You mouthed as you tipped your head to the captain.
He leaned in to whisper to you. "Much better than expected. He's a smart kid. But he doesn't actually need to know that stuff. It's my way of hazing him."
Beni's head snapped up and he jumped to his feet "YOU-"
"We have a guest." Gaku interrupted as he turned to face the door.
She was an unexpected guest. She always sent a subordinate for deliveries. "Oh. Captain Hibana. Please come in." You welcomed. She stepped hesitantly into the station. "Thank you for again sharing your materials with us. I wasn't expecting you to come personally..." You bowed.
"Lieutenant. I. Would like to humbly ask for a trade." She, to the room's surprise, returned your bow.
"Of course. What it is?"
"Could I please have one of your bullets. For my own protection. I don't think I could kill a demon infernal on my own." Her posture was defeated, and she still looked at the ground as she asked you. "I was on one of the Heijima teams that tried to replicate that technology. With no success. I-" You took her hand and placed three bullets in the center of her palm. "You just have these on your at all times?" You smiled softly at her. "This is so fucked up. You can protect us from these monstrosities that only a few," she looked at the men in the room, "can kill on their own. But you need us to protect you from other humans."
