Shine walked through the meadow, constantly looking at the sky. Skywings had occasionally flown over and dropped trash. They tended to forget that there was an entire tribe of dragons that lived there. She looked back and saw her mom. The sun glinted off of Shine's scales as she walked back to her mom. "Do you really want to be late for your first day of school?" Her mom asked. Shine shook her head. She was going to Jade Mountain Academy, and she was the only Glasswing going. She was also, the only Glasswing with all of the breath abilities and invisibility. She walked into her room. She heard claws tapping outside her door. She left her room and walked outside of the castle. She was a B Commoner, and she could one day be a queen. Shine closed her eyes and breathed in.
She had to remain calm. "Are you excited?" Glimmer asked from beside her. Glimmer was Shine's best and only friend. Glimmer didn't care that Shine had all the breaths and invisibility. She still hung out with her. "No. I have to go though. My mom insisted on it. I want to stay here, with you," Shine said. Glimmer nodded in agreement. "Ready to go?" Shine's mom asked. Shine sighed. A small amount of Stunbreath came out of her mouth. "Yes," Shine responded. She hugged Glimmer and her mom before taking off. Jade Mountain Academy wasn't far away, and she got there quickly. Shine didn't see any other dragons, so she was either late or early, or everyone else was late. She landed on the grass lightly, almost completely silent. Shine took a deep breath before walking inside. "Oh, you're late," said a black dragonet. If she was right, this was a Nightwing.
"I'm Fatespeaker. You must be Shine, right?" Fatespeaker asked. Shine nodded. Fatespeaker passed her a scroll. "This will tell you all the winglets. Your name will be in the winglet you're in. Don't worry; we told all of your clawmates that you were a Brightwing," Fatespeaker said. "It's Glasswing," Shine corrected her. Fatespeaker nodded. Shine walked off, looking for her cave. She found it some time later, and she looked around. "There were only seven beds, meaning someone had forgotten that a Glasswing was joining them. Shine looked to her side and saw a small bookshelf. It had books about letters, and scrolls for beginners. Shine wondered if she would have to share a cave with a baby dragonet.
Shine looked down at her scroll and started to read. Welcome To The Jade Mountain Academy! Shine realized that there were more Glasswings coming. She had forgotten that she wasn't the only one going. Glimmer had told her that she was the only on going. Maybe she was testing me, Shine thought. Clearly, I failed. Someone passed her door. Shine caught a glimpse at the scales. The were bright and sub-dued all at once. Vitality! Shine thought with excitement. This meant she wasn't late. Glasswings were orderly and disliked being late or early. "Vitality! I forgot you were coming!" Shine said, poking her head out the cave. Vitality whipped around. "Shine! Mother didn't tell me you were coming!" Vitality said happily. They hugged. Shine let go of Vitality. "Well, off I go," Vitality said. She walked off.
Shine walked back into the cave. She sat down in a corner and waited for her, what had Fatespeaker called them? Clawmates. And what we're in is called a winglet. The school is called Jade Mountain Academy, she thought. She wanted to memorize all the names before she could make a mistake. If everyone laughed at her for one thing, she might become more likely to drop a classification. Shine spent her time reading while she waited for her clawmates to come. After a while, she heard the sound of claws outside the cave. She closed the scroll and looked up in fear, accidentally turning invisible. A small Nightwing walked inside the cave, holding a scroll. She turned to look at the corner Shine was hiding in. She stared for a long moment.
The dragonet looked away, shaking her head. What was that for? I didn't make any noise, Shine thought. She watched the dragonet look at the scrolls. Suddenly, the dragonet crumpled to the floor, holding her head. Shine didn't know what to do. She'd never seen a Glasswing crouch down like that. The sound of arguing reached her ears. Shine pressed her ears to her head. She didn't like hearing dragons argue. Shine glanced down at her scales. She became visible again. The sound of a dragon shouting made her shut her eyes. She curled into a ball. Shine couldn't believe she was hiding. All B Commoners were supposed to be brave and loyal. Shine wasn't being brave at all.
After a while, Shine felt someone's wing on her back. She opened her eyes to see the Nightwing dragonet standing over her, her wing on Shine's back. The dragonet immediately pulled it back. "sorry," she muttered, looking down. Shine stood up. They were about the same size, with the Nightwing being a bit taller. "It's all right. Thanks," Shine said. The Nightwing shuffled her feet. "My name is Moonwatcher, but you can call me Moon," she said. "Nice to meet you. My name is Shine," Shine replied. Moon looked up. Shine noticed that there was a small silver scale by each one of Moon's eyes. They wear shaped like teardrops. A cloud of yellow walked into them. "Oops! Sorry, I didn't see you there! My name is Kinkajou!" Kinkajou said.
