The figure covered Faith's mouth, leaving her screams muffled. She thrashed around frantically, clawing at the cold hands that covered her mouth. Her heart was beating wildly. She screamed even louder, not caring if the orphanage heard her. The night-watchers didn't wear hoods. Who was attacking her?
The figure dragged Faith to the cluster of slender willows up ahead and uncovered her mouth and threw back its hood.
"Kay?" Faith squinted. The golden haired boy nodded silently.
Kay was the same age as Faith but she had only met the orphan on a couple of occasions. Once, when she was sent to get some water and she had bumped into him at the well where he was supposed to get water for gardening. The two had acknowledged each other before carrying out their separate duties and going on their separate ways. Another time, when she was sent to clean up the boys' dormitory and she had seen him staring at a faded picture of a couple, oblivious to her presence. His parents, she had supposed. The third and the latest time she had seen him when he was sent into the Office the day after she had found him in the dormitory, where severe punishments took place. And now here...
"You're running away too?" Faith asked carefully, slowly standing up, ready to make a run for it if needed. "Yes," Kay replied quietly, picking up a long stick that was beside him and putting on his hood, "Sorry Faith, I had to do that in case you were a night watcher,"
"Do you have a destination?" Faith asked,"I'm going to Scarborough to find my aunt. You could come with me,"
Kay thought about it for a while.
"Sure."
