You were back at the park bench a few days after the incident. You were reading one of your favorite books as the soft wind flowed by. This day, the sun was behind some light grey clouds, but some neighborhood children were running around the park. Their screams of joy filled the air but you were hyper-focused on your book. You were sucked into a different world, your mind belonging to them. You didn't notice someone sitting next to you but soon you get mad and slam the book closed. You put the book to your head and hold back some anger.
"Everything alright?"
You jump up, almost tossing the book. You look over to see the man from the other day, Tom.
"Jeez, you scared the shit out of me!"
He puts his hands up.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to"
A smile formed across his face. His face slightly lights up when he smiles. You shook your head and took a deep breath to calm your nerves. You set the book down in your lap and look back at him.
"You're looking better already"
He rubs the back of his neck.
"About that, I'm sorry about the states I was in. Not my best moment"
He laughs nervously and looks around. You could tell he wasn't the most comfortable person but he doesn't even know you... shit, he doesn't even know your name.
"(Y/N)"
"What?"
"My name, it's (Y/N)"
You put your hand out to his. He pauses then takes it and gives it a firm shake.
"Tom"
You smile.
"Nice to meet you"
"Yeah, nice to meet you too"
You lean back and look up at the gray sky. The clouds were light and if you paid attention, you could see where the sun was. You take a deep breath of the frosty winter air then stand up. You look at Tom and smile softly.
"Well Tom, it was nice meeting you officially. I hope you get better and if you ever need to talk, come here to the park. I will mostly be here Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays."
You give him a slight wave as you walk back to your house, book in hand and the fluffy snow under your feet.
A couple of weeks pass and you've talked to Tom more. You can tell he has some problems but you won't push him to open up. He's been at the park bench at least five times but when you ask if he needs to talk he just shakes his head. Most of the time you both talk about whatever comes up or if you get distracted by something else. It's been pretty peaceful hanging out with him. You learned that he plays the base and when you asked him more about it he just shrugged it off. An odd character but you've grown up differently from most. Guess weird and odd is just normal for you. You put on a baggie gray hoodie and head out to the park. Little snowflakes gently fell from the sky. You pull your hood up and watch as the snowflakes fall with a slight shine. You smile and head to the park bench. A chill shot up your spine and your body shivered to try and warm up. The world was busy around you. Cars raced by, people walked quickly to their destination, and people yelled to advertise products. City life was never the most ideal but you grew up here, these are the streets you caused trouble on. Before you know it, you were back at the park. Tom looks over at you and waves. You smile and wave back. Now that you think about it, you've never seen his hair down. It was always spiked up. You sit down and sigh.
"You normally get all dressed up. What's different?"
"Eh, I didn't have the energy to put on a whole outfit when I could just be cozy."
He chuckles and leans back.
You look up and close your eyes, letting the snowflakes lightly kiss your face. You smile as you feel them melt down your face. The cool feeling as drips falls down your face. The back of your neck itches, someone is staring at you. You open your eyes and look over at Tom. He uses his sleeve to wipe a drop from your face. You pause, with a confused look on your face. He smiles and looks around the park.
"Sir, you can't just smile in response"
He chuckles and looks back at you.
"Well, what did you want me to say?"
You take a second to think as a cocky smile spreads across Tom's face.
"Exactly"
You lightly punch him on the shoulder as he mocks pain.
"OWWW that hurt"
His words dripped with sarcasm as you shoot him a glare.
