Treacherous

Mutations

I gasp and fall to my knees. A large knife is lodged in Martin's stomach, slowly bleeding out, leaving Martin in a fit of cries and whimpers.

A minute later, his cannon is heard.

Alexi just stands there with an innocent look on her face. Oh how I wish I could kill her.

I leap on top of her and pin her to the ground. Her eyes show no fear, only insanity.

"Bad mistake." She says. She rolls over, and now shes on top of me.

Alexi pins down my wrists with her feet and takes out a very small knife.

"Oh, where to start?"

She traces the outline of my face with the knife. 

Two small hands suddenly grasp Alexi's neck.

"Milly!" I shriek.

Alexi bites Milly''s hands, causing Milly to shout in surprise and release her neck.

Another Career grabs Milly's wrist and ties them together with a rope.

All the Careers run away with Milly, leaving us hopeless and shocked.

Ava immedientley begins running after them. She is stopped in her tracks when a guy Career walk up to her with a sword.

"We'll save you for later." He smirks and runs off. Ava starts to cry and I join her. Who knows whats going to happen to Milly now.

We make our way back to camp, and we still haven't heard a cannon.

"Oh I hop she's alright." Luis says. Ava and I nod in agreement.

We fall to sleep eventually, and not one cannon wakes us up.

"I'm going to go hunt." I tell them in the morning.

I climb out of the hole and enjoy the fresh air.

Two seconds later I hear screaming. I glance around.

Thundering footsteps shake the ground and I look to my left where I first see the mutations.

They have slick, white fur and ginormous green eyes. they are about twice my size and have long, stretched tails. They're teeth are stained with blood.

"Brielle?" Luis and Ava call as they climb out of the hole.

I don't have enough time to warn them.

Ava screeches while a mutation pins her to the ground. I grab a knife out of my belt and plunge it into it's side.

The mutation falls to the ground and dies.

"Okay... one left and about..... a million to go." Luis says.

I look back to my left and see a herd of them sprinting towards us.

"In the hole!" Ava shouts. We all dive into the hole.

Above we hear clawing and snarling as the mutations desperately try to get in.

We huddle in the corner and a few minutes later we hear a cannon boom.

I gasp about the same time as Ava and Luis. Who's cannon was that?

When the sound of growling leaves, we poke our heads through the top and look to the sky.

The smiling face of the eleven year old girl we failed to save was amongst the stars.
