Nancy was indeed, not joking, and both her and Robin left to their appointment with the Pennhurst asylum director as soon as they were both ready and dressed.

Steve and Ruby went back to the basement, only to see that Max still remained in the same position as before, sitting near the desk and writing the time away.

It made Ruby wonder, naturally, what she's writing. She could guess, though.

Steve, Ruby, Dustin and Lucas were all crammed together on the couch. They couldn't help but stare at the redhead with worried looks.

"I know you guys are staring at me." Max looked discreetly over her shoulder.

Immediately everyone did anything but look in her direction, acting as if they were busy doing something else.

Dustin decided silence is key, and quickly leaned to grab a magazine from the coffee table, pretending he has been reading it the whole time.

The rest of them talked over each other clumsily, coming up with baffling and silly excuses.

"Staring? Nah. I don't know what you're talking about, Madmax." Ruby fake laughed and stole a small white ball from Steve's hands and began tossing it up and down in the air.

"What, sorry?" Steve said as he pretended suddenly that the loose strands of Ruby's ripped jeans were extremely interesting and started playing with them with his fingers.

"You said you needed something?" Lucas asked, trying to sound as innocent as he could while holding a newspaper, unaware it's actually upside down.

"Just hanging out." Steve twirled the thin strings around his thick (in contrast) fingers.

Max sighed loud enough for them to hear it from across the room.

"How you think your eyes boring into the back of my head is protecting me from Vecna, I don't know." The redhead mumbled to herself.

She got up and walked towards them, multiple sealed letters in hand.

They all still tried to keep up their little charade. Not looking up to her as she stood right before them.

"You can look at me now." The Mayfield girl shrugged.

Again, they all spoke at once.

"Thank you, sorry." Dustin closed the broad magazine.

"Sorry." Lucas tossed the newspaper on the table.

"Sorry." Steve whispered softly, leaving Ruby's jeans alone and simply resting his hand on her lower thigh.
