The ride to the church was long and tiring, I spent the entire time being squashed between Donna, Bean and Curly which was as much of a nightmare as you can imagine. The heat certainly wasn't as warm as yesterday but I found it grated on my nerves worse than ever in the cramped space.
The family was dressed smart, church clothes if you will, I wasn't sure if they'd all picked funeral clothes so much as going out for dinner but I supposed it didn't matter when it came down to it.
Funerals were dreary as it is, maybe my dads blue shirt and Sally's black, white and pink top would it give a less dead vibe. I briefly registered my dad calling back to us that we were just around the corner from the church and I prayed to the god I didn't believe in as a thank you for giving me a nearer opportunity to get the fuck out of this car.
My dad shifted in his seat, seemingly sitting straighter and with more pseudo confidence than I'd seen over the last week just as the car slowed down and came to a stop. "Hey, now." He called over to a trio of conversations guys.
I briefly mused if he was attempting to cat call them, it wouldn't surprise me much if he was secretly into guys but if he was cat calling I'd definitely have no qualms stealing one sock out of every pair and letting Curly lick his toothbrush. Though that thought was quenched by the males responded to my fathers need to be an embarrassment.
A blonde man with goatee laughed slightly while pointing in my dads direction before a short haired brunette man began speaking loudly back to him. "Lamonsoff." He called and I came to the quick conclusion that they were well enough acquainted. "Rolling up in a Caddy?" He teased good naturally.
"That's how we do it."
Sally began to make a move to get out the car and thankfully Donna followed, giving me space get out myself. Curly had sat across both mine and Donna's lap the whole ride here, most of his weight had landed on me though as she decided she simply couldn't sit and do nothing the whole time, and my legs had fell dead with the pain that was pins and needles. The brunette man had made his way over to the car, standing just before my dad in the passenger seat as he threw out a joke, "And you, you've grown up on me, man. Are you a b-cup now?"
"Hey, nice ears. You get the NFL package on those?" They both began wheezing at each others banter and I found my lips twitching upward at the stupidity of these fully grown men.
The blonde had made his way over with dark skinned man that also adorned a goatee and joined in on the conversation. "Nice Caddy. You selling lawn furniture and crack?" The dark skinned man grinned.
"Come on, I'm the co-owner of Branchville Lawn Furniture, man." He shrugged back, smiling. I hopped out of the car and my way to stand beside Sally, who stood just behind the chatting group of men with Donna at he side and Bean in her arms. Dad stayed sat in the car with Curly still int he backseat and we stood with what I thought to be the three other males families. "I'm the boss now, baby." He continued, almost bragging but still, in a way, joking.
"Oh, good for you Eric." The man began petting Curly before he took a dig at my dad again. "Glad you brought your mother this time." I rolled my eyes at him, lips twitching to smile yet again. There was just no beating a good yo mama joke, ever.
"Oh, that's a good one." My dad praised him. They both shook hands slightly before my dad got ready to go park the car. "Wow, it's like shaking hands with an eagle." He smirked, as if accomplished by his stupidity yet again. Finally, he drove off with an 'I'll se you later' called back at them.
The trio continued to laugh between each other as they turned and looked up towards the church. Sally began walking a little closer to the church and I followed as I barley caught a sentence from the blonde man. "Oh, my god. It's Captain Caring of the SS Melodrama."
