The drive up to New York felt like forever. It was terrifying, I would know no one at the camp. Kendall was on vacation with her family, and Mom doesn't want Kenzie to go because she's "too young". I looked out the window. The breeze felt great on my skin. Green trees started coming into view. I can't believe this.
We arrived at Camp Hilltop around noon. The heat was absolutely unbearable. I was sweating the minute I stepped out of the car. Ahead of me loomed dozens of wood cabins. Campers reunited with their friends. Counselors directed young kids toward their cabins. Mom helped me take my luggage out of the trunk. She hugged me and pulled me close. "Have fun Maddie, make some new friends. I love you. See you in two weeks!". She then climbed into the car, waved one last time, and drove off. I was alone.
I found a nice counselor named Cat near the entrance. "First year?" she asked. I nodded. "Well, don't worry we're quite a lovely bunch" I could hear a little bit of doubt in her voice. Just a little. She must have seen the worry on my face because she said, "You'll fit right in!". After her little pep talk she guided me toward my cabin. I was in Cabin H.
The cabin was nice. It had a cute red roof and a little porch. I walked up the steps. My heart was beating so fast. Finally, I slowed my breathing and took a step inside. Seven pairs of eyes turned and looked at me. Inside, there was five bunk beds. A counselor (I was guessing she was the cabin counselor) smiled and came to greet me. "Hi! So glad to meet you. I'm Rylee your cabin counselor. You're the newbie right?". "Yeah, I'm Maddie. Happy to meet you" I replied. "Well let me introduce you to everyone!" she said. Two girls on one bunk were on an IPod, giggling. "This is Kiki," she said pointing to the red head, "and this is Allie" she said pointing to the blonde. "Nice to meet you" I said. They nodded in response. The next girl was alone on the bottom bunk. She had pretty brown hair and hazel eyes. "This is Blair" said Rylee. "Glad to meet you" Blair said. I was then introduced to the next three girls. All of them seemed okay, but none of them seemed like they wanted to be my friend. This was gonna be a hard two weeks.
