"I feel like we are just going back to the start. Being all terrified..." Brooklyn said quietly as we laid side by side in the grass.
I sighed. "I know. It's even worse this time around."
"When we're eighteen, let's move to New York City. Or... At least some place more accepting then here."
I nodded sadly. "Brooklyn... I'm so sorry. I bet you wish you never even moved here.
The New Yorker say up quickly, her anklet jingling. "Don't ever say that! It's not true! I love you so much and I would do anything for you! I'd take a billet for you! Babe, I'd die for you."
Tears came to my eyes. "I feel the same way."
We both laid back down.
"Imagine the big penthouse we'll live in with all our cats!" This time, it was me who spoke.
"Ehh... I'm more of a dog person." Brooklyn teased.
"Then we'll get both!"
"Won't they fight?"
"We'll teach them to love of course!"
Brooklyn laughed her amazin' laugh. "Good plan."
"And I'll be a big author and you'll be a professional singer and dancer!"
Again she laughed. "I have no doubt you'll achieve your dream, but I don't know about mine. It's a bit far-fetched."
I shook my head vehemently. "It'll happen."
"If you say so."
"I do."
"Well then it must be true."
"Exactly. Case closed."
That laugh again. "I love you."
"I love you back. But I have to go. My parents will get suspicious if I'm not at he diner. I'm sure they'll call Karen to find out."
We reluctantly parted ways and I made my way to the diner, sittin' in my usual spot at the counter on one of those sticky red circle seats.
Karen was cleanin' a glass and glanced at me and then away again quickly.
By now I was used to this, but it didn't make it any less hurtful.
"Could I get a BLT?" I asked timidly.
"I don't know." Karen began in a harsh tone. "I don't know if I wanna serve people like you."
I was very taken aback. Karen was usually so sweet to everyone, especially me. "Isn't that... Illegal?"
Karen rolled her eyes and wrote down the order. "It'll be a long wait."
"I don't mind."
"It could be cold."
"Aren't they supposed to be?"
"I might spit in it."
"Do you just want me to leave?" I snapped. "Because I won't so save your breath!"
That shut good old Karen right up.

The rest of the people in town were acting more or less like Karen as well.
They turned away when they saw me or grimaced. Some muttered rude things under their breath.
It was like I had some contagious virus that was makin' everyone stay away.
At home I ate in my room because eatin' with my parents was too painful. They just ignored me too or else said things in a cold tone of voice. I'd never heard someone say "pass the salt" with so much venom in their tone until then.
The one thing that surprised me was that they didn't take away my phone or laptop. They didn't even want to check them.
In a way this hurt more. It was like they just didn't care anymore. Like I didn't exist or like I wasn't worth their time. That feelin' sucked and the worst part was that it never went away.
Some nights I couldn't sleep and is hear them whisperin' about me. At first I would be happy that they were at least acknowledgin' me. Except for the fact that they referred to me as "that girl." I just wasn't their daughter anymore. They didn't love me.
