Over 170 years ago in the town of Tibet on the top of an isolated mountain lay a temple filled with highly trained guardians whose one job is to learn of and protect the inactive Miraculouses. The Celestial Guardians are also entrusted in finding worthy holders of many Miraculouses that would protect the world from any kind of danger.

All Celestial Guardians start as Apprentice Guardians until their mentor decides that they are ready for the test. The test is to guard a Miraculous Box for 24 hours. One particular Apprentice was in training to be the successor to Celestial Guardian Su-Han. Apprentice Wang Fu didn't wish to be a Guardian but his mentor put him to the test anyway.

He was tasked to guard the Chinese Miracle Box which was known as the Mother Box because it was the first to be created and held all the most powerful Miraculouses. However, Wang Fu became hungry and went against Precept 133 "A Guardian cannot, under any circumstances, wear a Miraculous." He used the Peacock Miraculous to summon a sentimonster that would get him food. The negative emotions towards the Guardians and Miraculous that Wang Fu was feeling caused the sentimonster to turn evil and caused it to devour the Miraculouses.

That day, the Temple of the Guardians, the Miraculous Spellbook and many Miracle Boxes were destroyed along with the lives of all the Guardians, apart from Apprentice Fu, who is the last living Guardian. However the active Miraculouses and their holders continued to live on, fighting all evils and being passed on throughout time.

The Phoenix Miraculouses had always been entrusted to a pair. It had been passed down through the one family, the children growing up knowing that their destiny one day was to take over the role of their parents. The Phoenix family, as they were known at the temple, only had one child per generation so that the child could give the other half of the Phoenix Miraculous to their beloved.

But... 15 years ago the Phoenix holders at the time gave birth to twins. One boy and one girl. They were named Kai, meaning the ocean and Mackenzie, meaning fire. Names derived from the two Phoenixes that have been protecting the world for many centuries.

The twins grew up side by side learning about the history of the Miraculouses, travelling around the world and learning how to fight so that one day they could be the new holders of the Phoenix Miraculouses. The twins sat with their fingers crossed as they waited for their parents to return home after a day of fighting evil, the twins watched as their parents came home each day with more bruises and injuries that they tried to cover up and the twins prayed to whoever would listen that their parents would always come back to them.

Until one day they didn't.
