Ruby Red

Chapter 1

A/N: read the summary/description before reading this book please!

The dark eerie moonlight set a depressing mood to the once joyful playground. The rushing river was the only distinguishable sound. Silence lay in the playground for minutes. Then a laugh came from the nearest house as small brunette runs over to the swing. The slow creaks of the swing cast a spell over the playground.
A loud scream escapes her mouth, piercing into the night. She slithers off the swing, dead. The crunching of leaves, and the swing of long blonde curls and the park is empty.

"Ruby!" Grace calls from the end of one of the many long hallways of Clearview High School.

"Grace!" Ruby calls back running to stand by her side.

"How was your trip?" Ruby asks.

"Great actually. Dylan annoyed me less than I imagined, so I could actually enjoy London." She says laughing. Dylan, Grace's little brother can be a pest.

"Nice." Ruby says, and the bells rings.

"See you later Grace!" Ruby says, walking off to her first period class, Math.

"And that is how to solve a polynomial equation." Mr. Nicks explains, as if the class was excited. The bell rings, and the class starts to get up to leave. "Before you go, tonight's homework will be to study for the quiz we will be having tomorrow on everything we learned in class." The class groans.

"Great." Ruby mutters. "Another test I'm going to fail."

"I could help you." A boy with brown hair and brown eyes suggests. "I mean, if you want." He pauses. "I'm so sorry, I haven't introduced myself. I'm Ryder."

"Ryder. Well okay, why not." Ruby replies.

"Cool. Can you stay after school?"

Ruby nods. "Yep. See you then."

Ruby walks out of the room, to meet Grace by her locker.

"Ruuubbbbyyyyyy! You took so long." Grace scolds.

"Sorry! I ran into a kid who said he could help me study for our math test."

"Fine. But since you took so long, I have to go. My class is on the other side of the school."

"Okay. Bye Grace!" Ruby yells as she too runs off to class.

"¡Hola! ¿Cómo estas?" Señorita Rosa asks.
Silence fills the room. Señorita Rosa sighs. After more failed attempts to coax the class into actually speaking Spanish, she decided on something else.

"Okay class. Study Hall." Cheers fill the room, and kids pull out their phones.

"OMIGOSH." Becky Williamson exclaims. Everyone in the small class of 15 students gets up and runs over to Becky.

"Oh my." Another kid exclaims.

"Oi vey." Another sighs.

Ruby leans to see the small screen on the phone.

"Young girl found murdered at playground. The police are on the case right now, but the girl has been identified as Ellie David."

This wouldn't have been big news.

But the mother of Ellie David is the principal. And her older sister is a freshman, like Ruby.

After everyone seems to be caught up on the situation, Señorita Rosa talks with many board members and nearly everyone but the principal before telling the class that school will be let out early, and that we should all go home. Everyone cheered in happiness, because that's what any student would do if school let out early.

"Ruby! Over here!" Ryder, the kid from math class calls. "Come sit next to me." He pats the bus seat next to him.

"Okay." Ruby says walking over to sit down. "What's up?"

"Nothing." He says. "Can I help you study now? I mean it's a 40 minute ride."

"Sure." Ruby says, as Ryder pulls out his math work.

They begin studying, and it's going really well.

"You know, I actually suck at math..." Ryder says.

Ruby laughs. "Well then why did you say you could help me?"

"Because I like you." He says, grinning.

"Ummmmm, I don't really know what I am supposed to say in this situation." Ruby says awkwardly.

"Give me your number." He says, demanding.

"Umm. Okay, why not. Here you go." She says, writing it down on a piece of paper.

"I've got to go now." Ruby says, after a long pause, standing up to get off the bus.

"What was that..." Ruby muttered to herself, stepping off the bus.
