''There,'' Kris Hart's voice began soothingly, the woman continued rubbing her husband's arm in reassurance.Any form of consolence however fled the blonde headed woman the moment the front door of the house began to creak open. Kris's head swiveled to the door immediately. Unfriendly eyes flickering onto the form of her son who'd just arrived home. Henry hadn't yet noticed, head still downcast. Instantaneously the woman's voice turned thunderous at Henry's presence. Clearly the woman had been ready to hound her son the second he arrived. It's why Illy contained rage seeped as Kris spoke once more.
''There you are young man!''
The woman watched as Henry shuffled inside upon hearing her voice, lips pursed. Above all, she took in the gradual twitch in the youngers expression. Noticed the way the boy seemed to wilt. A telltale sign in itself that the teen was particularly anxious.
It didn't matter though. Anxious or not Kris wasn't delaying this conversation. Wasn't giving Henry the time to back out of it.
''Henry,''
''Yeah, I'm here. Honestly though Mom,'' Henry uttered before firmly shutting the door behind him. ''Whatever it is can it please wait? I could sense the lecture from a mile away. I'm not really in the mood right now. I just got in a huge fight with my boss, and I don't even know if I'm gonna'—''
''My son is a failure!'' Jake interrupted Henry. And it effectively stopped him from talking anymore.
Because wait, what?
Henry peered over at his father and sure enough the man's expression was enough to make Henry freeze. Albeit he was admittedly a bit puzzled as to what was going on. He couldn't think of anything he'd necessarily done to anger his parents lately.
It had to be something though... something big he thought as he studied his parent's faces.
Cold. That's the only way he could begin to describe the elder's voice. His father's voice was chiseled with an iciness, one that left Henry reeling. And while it wasn't exactly uncommon territory for his father to say such things something about this seemed different. Deep down Henry knew that this time his dad wasn't joking, one look at his mother backed that notion up. Seeing as her eyes vaguely held the same contempt look as his father's.
Nervously Henry scratched at the nape of his neck. Up until now, he hadn't even known that his father was capable of sounding that impersonal and disappointed. He didn't like it.
Despite that, it wasn't the overall revulsion of his father's tone that got to Henry. It was what was being said. For his dad to call him... A failure was cruel.
It pained Henry more than he'd like no matter how extensively he wished it didn't. This hadn't exactly been the warm welcome he'd wanted upon coming home. He'd be the first to admit It'd been anything but.
Nonetheless, he'd take the greeting Henry thought bemusedly.
''Your son is a what?'' Henry echoed dubiously.
''Fail-ure,'' Jake emphasized the words, pronouncing each syllable thoroughly.
''Okay, well,'' Henry's voice commenced when his mother's voice didn't dispute his father's statement. Didn't even attempt to defend him. He found his fingertips wafting against the railing of the stairs grounding him to the spot. As he discontinued his trek up the stairs. ''Ouch, that was a little harsh.''
''That's hardly harsh Henry,'' His mother added in. Jeez, what was this anyway Tag Team Henry Day or something?
''I mean you've gotta' admit It was a little harsh.'' Henry jabbed cheekily.
