The Girl and the Dingo:
It was a cold winter night, when the first snowflake had fallen. Jewel was out collecting firewood from the old wood pile lying to the east of the property, to light the fireplace. She loved taking the trail that led into the Forrest and by the lake. There was a fork in the trail that would take you off the property, her dad had warned her that it was dangerous to take that fork and that you would never be able to find your way back. Jewel had grown afraid of the blood thirsty animals that were said to prowl the bush that surrounded the country property. Jewel quickened her pace as she neared the fork in the trail. far in the distance she heard a wolf howling, calling, searching.
Jewel heard something cry. she turned in the direction of the sound, only to find she was facing the forbidden fork in the trail. Again she hears the distraught sound. Acting on instinct she ran down the forbidden path, deeper into the Forrest, forgetting everything. With every step her worries and fears melt to nothing. Then, after almost tripping over a rock she found the thing that had made the cry.
it was a black spot in the middle of the path that caught her eye. Seeing the little lump of fur lying there so innocently made her become instantly attached to it. Ever so carefully she picked up the puppy and continued on with her original journey. When she reaches the farm house she drops the wood and walks into the house, still cuddling the shaking puppy.
Jewel’s father looks up from where he was sitting with concern and asked “Where were you!, I was worried sick about you! I thought you had been bitten by a poisonous snake or attacked by Wolves!” he paused for a moment then peered at what I was holding. “It was by the forbidden path”, Jewel added hastily, knowing perfectly well that She was in trouble.
“Filthy beast get it out of here and take it back to where you found it”. Jewel made for the door as quickly as she could. She sprinted towards the trail, stopping for no-one. When she reached the fork in the trail, Jewel ever so gently put the wolf down. She slowly took her eyes off the crawling puppy and turned around, but even with all her will she couldn’t walk away. How could she just walk away? In the end, the pup was raised in jewels secret location, on the property, well away from her dad.
Two years later...
Shadow the dingo puppy and jewel are wandering around the property not far from the farm house. Jewel had planned to teach Shadow how to hunt, that way she wouldn’t have to keep sneaking meat out to him. Jewel poked a stick into the hole and within a few seconds a rabbit appeared. It bolted right in front of Shadow, bad move, Shadow acting on instinct snapped at the rabbit. the rabbit swerved but shadow was faster and caught the rabbit. Shadow ate the rabbit then seeming satisfied, lay down resting his head on a tuff of grass.
Jewel walked into the farm house when her dad looking very unhappy walked into the room. “This is disastrous!” Her dads frown was even more apparent. “Ten hens, i cow!” his voice trailed off. Darn “Foxes and wolves” I went outside to check on Shadow when a grey tipped brown fox sprang out from one of the bushes. It took a chuck of flesh out of my arm, screaming i fell backwards. The fox was on top of me pinning me down. I could feel and hear its every breath. Shadow knocked the fox off me, surprising me as much as the fox. Before the fox had time to recover it was pinned down By Shadow. Shadow wasting no time delivering the final blow. The fox went limp. Jewels dad came running from the farm house with his shotgun. The last thing i heard was the sound of a gun firing.
“OH MY GOD JEWEL! are you ok?” her dad shouted from where he stood. No answer... He dialed 000. When the Ambulance finally got there Jewel had started to stir. A dark figure caught his eye. It was The wolf pup that Jewel had found two years ago. It stood there, looking him in the eye, With the most saddest look which said “have you seen Jewel?”. He watched as the life left his eyes.
A burial was held for Shadow the following day. Whenever Jewel and her dad visits his grave they know his spirit lives on. At night They hear the cries, of the lone wolf Howling, Calling, Searching.
Even to this very day, Jewel wishes she hadn’t kept Shadow a secret.
