I walk into school, and immediately my friends find me. "Wassup, Hero?" I hear as I walk down the halls. I smile and nod, and listen vaguely as my friends tell me about the latest 1D crap.
I sigh. "No offense, guys, but 1D isn't my thing."
They smile and nod. "Yeah, saving people from a bus is," comments Lilah.
I groan and throw my head back. Since this is a small town, everyone that went to Lake Middle, like me, went to Lake High. Everyone knows of my "heroic" act.
"Seriously! I appreciate it but I would just love to go one day without someone mentioning what I did three years ago!"
Again, in a small town, no one lets anything go. For example, Tony Rike still gets crap about the time he caused a fire in a school microwave, and that was in 5th grade!
Matt rolls his eyes, and I just now realize he's there. He's so quiet sometimes!
"I get you babe," he says, slinging an arm around my shoulder. I laugh. "Get off freak!"
He smiles and ambles to class.
I have History first, and Mr. Hink doesn't like tardy delinquents, even if they are named Hero. I rush to class, and sit down.
When he does roll call, the PA system crackles to life for the morning news. "Teachers, mark these kids off your list, until any further notice. Amy Hunt, Jackson Wood, Lauren Lutt, and Kyle Lutt.
I look down in respect, and everyone copies me. Typical.
I sigh, but oh well. At least they're copying something good I'm doing.
And just like that, four kids disappear off the school's record. We all know it's the Takers.
It's just that no one says it.
Class starts and everyone forgets the stolen students.
Not me. I never forget any of them.
It's just a normal school day, in a nation where it's become normal to lose four kids in one day to a growing threat.
