Tomorrow was supposed to be a good day. Adam Costa was turning eight years old and his entire baseball team was going to be at Pizza Town to celebrate with him. He was getting the magic show he wanted, even though it was just his Uncle Benny in a cape doing tricks he learned from the back of a comic book.
It's a humid day for being Winter in Synchronicity, Ohio. Adam is going to be in the second half of the first grade and shared the day with his mom as his morning teacher and Mr. Sparks as the afternoon instructor. He was popular and a class clown but he studied enough to get all A's.
His older sister is on the other side of the school in the Upper Grade building. She was in the fifth grade. Not as popular as her little brother, and more of a bookworm then an athlete. It wasn't until they were going to move to the new house that their parents are buying that they would have to start at a new school. That was something nobody looked forward to but it was still a world away from January 24th.
It was 1976 and kids can be kids. There wasn't anything that Adam and his sister feared except for the move. Neither of them were excited to leave the school behind and it was going to be a huge adjustment for the entire family.
But his birthday was nothing like he imagined it was going to be.
You see, last night God answered Adam. He had a fight with his mom over going to bed early and asked to be anyone BUT Adam Costa today.
And he stood in front of the mirror looking at his reflection that morning and couldn't see any signs of Adam. Not the painted finger nails. Not the ponytail with long hair that was half way down his back. Not the fuzzy pink slippers and pink robe that he wore.
He wasn't Adam at all.
He was a g....
"Britney! Britney Rene Wilcox Williams get your birthday butt down here this instant. I told you I was going to be late today! " A shrill voice came from below. Adam opened the door and a voice he didn't recognize came out and said " Im coming now!"
And he made his way through the strange house he woke up in and tried to make sense of it all.
