Las Almas, Mexico...

Pitch-black darkness is all I can see with a bandana covering my eyes. Along with the restraints holding my arms together, I'm captured. Visions of the moments leading us to this flash in my mind. All I can remember was the nightclub and endless shots of tequila. It was to celebrate my 24th birthday, I'd been planning this trip for a while.

"Let me fucking go!" I shout, once realizing the gravity of the situation. Despite my lack of sight, I can feel the familiar humming of an engine. They're moving me by car.

"Cierra la boca", a man's voice comes from beside me. He squeezes my thigh tightly with his bare hand.

"I don't speak Spanish asshole!" I try to resist his touch but it only angers him.

"I said keep your mouth shut", he angrily translates, still keeping his thick Mexican accent.

Unexpectedly, a rag is forced into my mouth, preventing me from speaking. The urge to fight is overwhelming but I know I need to keep my cool and use my witts.

After some time passes the criminals talk amongst themselves, judging by their dialects they're all from here. "How much longer have we got?" the man next to me asks.

"A few miles, all we need to do is hand her off. They'll take care of the rest." another man says.

"What's so fucking special about her anyway?"

"She's a politician's daughter from the states, we need to put fear back into their hearts" the chilling words come from him in a menacing tone.

As the pair speak, my mind races thinking of how this could've happened. My family has always been involved in politics but it never affected my life. Despite growing up with more money than most, I was ordinary.
Whatever trouble my dad got himself into
must be serious.

To conclude the short travel, we turn on a   gravel road. Slowly the vehicle comes to a stop and instantly I'm pulled out with my eyes and mouth still covered. My captor forces my hands behind my back and guides me.

"I thought you motherfuckers got lost" a different man's voice approaches. He also talks with a heavy accent.

"We ran into some issues but we handled it. She's all yours amigo, alive and well like we agreed to." he sighs with relief.

"Take her inside" orders are given and without warning, I'm passed off to another stranger. His strong fingers are cold as they wrap around my arm. I obediently go along with it all, knowing there's nothing I can do. If I fight, I would be making it worse.

We walk through grass and dirt until I hear the familiar sound of a door open. With sharpened hearing ability, I notice our footsteps echo once inside. It's likely an abandoned building, which would make sense considering they're trying to hide me.

"Siéntate!" he pushes me down into a chair then quickly moves to bind my arms and legs in place.

Once secured he removes the cloth covering both my eyes and mouth. "The ropes are tight" I struggle against the restraints. They're already beginning to scratch my skin.

"They're supposed to be! You should be glad to be alive. Most don't make it this far" the tall intimidating figure switches to English.

Now that I have my vision back, I scan the entirety of him. With an automatic rifle at his side, the man is dressed in dirty army fatigue. Along with a black mask that hides the bottom half of his face.

"Why are y'all keeping me here?" I ask with rapid breath as my sight shifts across the vacant concrete room. Grime and blood coat the walls, and the smell is ungodly. Deep down I know the answer but I still keep hoping that this is all a misunderstanding.

His dark eyes stare at me for a moment before he silently leaves the room. On his way out he locks it, leaving me alone in this hellish place.

An endless stream of tears flows down my cheeks. I try to hold back but my emotions get the best of me. Everything I regret in my past comes rushing to the forefront of my mind. This isn't the end I expected, I would do anything to see my family again.

The thought of my mom having to see my dead body makes me cry even harder. The sounds of my sadness echo through the halls, whoever is here I'm sure is hearing all of this.
