The morning sun had barely kissed the sky, when Vivienne found herself in the kitchen preparing her step mother and two step sisters' morning drinks.

The dim light gently filtered through the windows, illuminating Vivienne's figure as she busied herself in the kitchen, preparing tea for her step mother and two step sisters.

Suddenly, the harsh echo of her step mother's voice echoed down the hall, "Vivienne! Vivienne, where's my morning tea?! Are you slacking again?!"

Quickly, Vivienne responded, keeping her voice low, "Coming, Step Mother!"

Vivienne hated her step family and the way they made her do more menial chores or limited her food portions for the week if they didn't approve of her actions. She felt trapped, without any ability to change her situation.

Vivi constantly indulged in the fantasy of running away, yearning for a life away from her wretched step mother and step sisters. Alas, there was no escape for her. Her mother had perished during her birth, and her father had died when she was only 15, leaving her to her grim fate. And what's more, there was no one else to turn to - no family, no friends - only the three half-relatives that made up what little remained of her life.

With the sound of her name screeching through the halls, Vivienne scurried to her step mother's grand room with a tray in hand. Balancing precariously on top was a kettle full of hot chamomile tea, some sugar cubes, and freshly sliced bread with butter. She entered and placed it carefully on the table, trying her best to steady her racing heart and keep cool in front of her tyrannical step family.

"At last, some much-needed assistance! Just look over my nightstand for a moment, dear girl." The saggy woman scowled. "You'll find a detailed list of tasks that require your unflagging attention. I suggest you dive straight in right away. It's imperative that everything is completed by six--failure to achieve this shall result in a longer list of chores tomorrow. Am I conveying my message clearly enough, for your information, my good girl?"

Vivienne struggled to maintain her composure in the face of her step-mother's dismissive tone and unrealistic demand for perfection. All the while, she desperately fought back the urge to snap back and tell her off for her own laziness and lack of contribution to the household. The poor girl found herself stretched thin between keeping up with her own daily chores, cleaning up after her lazy and irresponsible step-family, and completing an unrealistic to-do list that was ever-growing, leaving her utterly exhausted and near her breaking point.

Unable to contain her frustration any further, she replied with a strained 'genuine' smile and a faint glimmer of hope in her eyes, "Yes my lady," she said with all her might, her voice quivering.

Her step-mother, not registering the girl's distress at all, simply nodded and dismissed her with a wave of her hand. "Good. You are excused."

Vivienne's heart sank. With a heavy heart, she gathered the to-do list and exited the door, uncertain of how she would manage to complete the daunting list and still maintain her sanity.
