The first thing I noticed about the haunted house was how dark it was. It was dimly lit by candles that were scattered around the entrance. There wasn't a single lamp or light on in sight. I could barley make out the surroundings that weren't near the candles. The windows were covered by old dusty fabric curtains that blocked any light from entering the house that we were in.
"This place looks like it was built before electricity became a thing." Alex commented as he walked over to inspect the walls for any outlets or light switches.
"Yeah, it's super duper dark in here.. It's unsettling.." Noel said nervously, looking around the room.
"Don't you still sleep with a light on?" Ryann asked mischievously.
"No. I stopped doing that in middle school.. I only do it after I watch a scary movie.." Noel said, mumbling the second sentence to herself.
"You guys do remember that we have phone flashlights, right?" I asked as I pulled my phone out of my back pocket of my jeans and turned the flashlight on, shining a bright beacon of light into the room.
"Now we do." Ryann said sarcastically as she pulled out her phone.
"Do you guys wanna split up and explore? That could be fun." I said, looking around the house itching to see what forbidden terrifying secrets lurked within.
"You can go do that, but I'm gonna stick with at least one other person, thank you very much." Noel said as she wrapped one of her arms around Brennan's.
"Guess I'll look around with Noel." Brennan said as he walked to one side of the house, taking Noel with him.
"I'll look around with Alex, will you be okay by yourself (Y/n)?" Ryann asked as she looked over at me, almost shining her phone flashlight in my eyes. I lifted up one of my arms to shield my poor eyes.
"I'll be okay as long as you don't blind me. Have fun you too." I said as my lowered my arm and made my way to the kitchen area of the house, using my flashlight as a guide so I didn't bump into or trip over anything.
It looked like your standard kitchen, if your kitchen had a goblin living in it. There were cobwebs on the ceiling. The tiled floor looked like it hadn't been cleaned in ages. Some of the tiles had mysterious stains covering them that I probably wouldn't want to know the origin of. I leaned down to inspect one of the tiles closer, pointing my flashlight at it. Small, reddish brown droplets led into the direction of a rectangular box on one side of the room. I leaned back up and walked over to the cabinets. The pain was chipping off, and some of the handles were missing. In some of the open cabinets there were broken dishes and rat traps. Hopefully no rats were stuck in them. Nobody would ever find them at this rate. A large pot was sitting on the stove, with some unknown black murky liquid residing inside. It looked like a witch's brew. Like it had eye of newt, toe of frog, and crap like that in it. I was tempted to stick my finger in the pot see what the liquid was, but I decided against it with my better judgment. The sink was overrun with dishes. There was green mold that looked like it could survive a nuclear explosion growing on the dishes. I hope that's fake. Otherwise I'm probably going to catch something in here. Maybe this section was targeted to scare germaphobes. I spotted what appeared to be an old fashioned ice box that I had seen previously with the trail leading to it. Curious about what it could contained, I opened it.
I regretted that decision almost immediately. The contents including what looked like a severed head, an arm, and a foot. The smell of rotting flesh hit my nose. I shut the lid and covered my mouth and nose in disgust. Geez they really went all out with the props. I'll have to remind myself not to open stuff later. There might be more nasty stuff. I did another sweep of the kitchen with my flashlight to make sure I didn't miss anything. Once I had surveyed the cabinets, sink, freezer, stove, and the cobwebs, and the weird stains on the floor I concluded that there wasn't anything else to be found in this room. I left the kitchen and went back to the entrance area of the house, ready to find another place to explore, and possibly be frightened. A staircase led to the second floor of the house. Before I went up I wanted to see where everyone else was, in case if one of them had already explored up there.
"Are any of you upstairs?" I shouted, cupping my hands around my mouth to amplify the sound. There was a small pause before I got a response.
"Noel and me are in the living room!" Brennan shouted from what appeared to be the right side of the house.
"I'm with Ryann in some weird library!" Alex sounded like he was further back in the house.
"Alright, I'm gonna be upstairs if you need me!" I shouted as I headed up the stairs to the second floor.
