Carie was sitting at the desk in her room. She was studying for the math test she had tomorrow. Her best friend Ashton was laying on her bed with something on TV. She put down her pencil and leaned back on the chair to stretch. "god I feel like I've beed staring at this paper for hours." she groaned in a small complaint. She looked over at Ashton who was looking at something on his phone.
"Thats because you have been." he said with a small chuckle. "You should take a small break."
"I'm going to. but not too long though Ash, the test is tomorrow." She said giving him a stern look that made him chuckle, he could never take her seriously. "Oh, Ash I have something I want to tell you." she moved her chair so that it was facing her bed. she wanted to see his reaction to what she was about to say. She fidgeted with her locket nervously.
"Yeah, what's up?" he questioned suspiciously.
"I have a boyfriend." she told her best friend shyly.
"no way, since when? who is it? Do I know him?" he asked looking at her. this news was a little shocking to him, he was so curious about it. She had never mentioned liking someone before.
"Don't freak out though, ok?" she asked and he gave a small nod feeling weary. "It's Jacob." she spoke softly looking at her friend to see his reaction. Moving her locket around more frantically now.
"Jacob Wicker-Bottom?" he asked stunned in place. she nodded softly. "Carie you can't date him! that guy's a tool. he only wants one thing and it won't end well for you!"
"You said you wouldn't freak out." exclaimed Carie with a huff. "He isn't he's been nothing but kind to me since I met him. Why can't you be happy for me?" she felt hurt by her best friend's words. She held her locket firmly waiting for a response.
"Carie it's an act. He's not who you think he is trust me. You don't hear what he says in the locker room in gym class." he tried to explain himself. "I'm just trying to look out for you. I don't want to see you hurt." he says softly approaching her wanting to comfort her.
"get out." she says making him pause. "Get out!" she screams and starts to cry. "I thought you would be happy for me. I wanted you to be happy for me..." she cried looking at her lap her hands falling to rest there. "I wanted you to be happy for me." she added softly. "please leave my house." she says and her teary eyes look up at his.
"Carie I-" she cut him off
"You what Ashton, Hate that I'm in a relationship? can't stand the thought that someone else could bring me joy?" she huffs. "Just go."
"fine, but don't come crying to me when he uses you and breaks your heart." He says hurt and angry. He left slamming her bedroom door behind him.
She fell to the floor crying, knowing that this conversation tore a hole in her friendship.
-Four Years Later (present day)-
Carie sat on the wet floor of the bathtub. All the lights were off, and the door was locked. She held her legs close to her chest with one arm, the other one having her hand placed firmly on the locket that held her father's ashes. Wishing she hadn't told Jacob that her mom and stepdad were out of town. He was banging and screaming on the other side of the door. They argued, about why they hadn't had sex yet, and with her parents out of town, she'd run out of excuses.
"How FUCKING long do I have to wait Carie, It's been FOUR FUCKING YEARS!" he screamed through the door, hitting it every time he swore. "you're acting like a fucking child Carie we're adults in a relationship. we SHOULD be Fucking." he yelled at her. "God I can't stand it, You're such a FUCKING tease. Why can't we just fuck? or at least sext? You're so infuriating. WHAT AN ABSOLUTE WASTE OF 4 YEARS. I can't stand it, you're ALWAYS making excuses. It's so annoying. I'm your boyfriend, not some stranger!!!!" he continued "You know what fine. if you want to stay in there and throw a tantrum that's fine. be my guest but I'm not going to stand here and continue this conversation. FUCK YOU, Carie." He screamed before stomping down the stairs and slamming the front door being him.
Carie stayed on the cold wet floor of the shower sobbing into her knees. It felt like she'd been there for hours. She wanted to be sure he was gone.
She sat there for a while listening. she stood up inside the dark bathroom, before slowly walking over to the door. She put her ear against it listening, she slowly unlocked the door and opened it. silence. But she needed to make sure he was really gone. She poked her head into the hallway, and all the doors were closed except for her bedroom door, just like earlier when she ran to the bathroom for safety. She took a small step into the dark hall. she stood there for a moment before slowly making her way to the top of the stairs.
She peeked down them. The space below was only illuminated by the lamps in the living room. there was enough light to see the stairs but it was too dark to make out a person if there was one. She proceeded down the stairs with caution, making sure both her feet were on the step before proceeding to the next. when she reached the bottom she looked around and made her way swiftly to the front door, then she locked all three locks, the handle, the deadbolt, and the chain. she then swiftly made her way to the back patio door. Latching the sliding glass door closed. She took one final, brave look into the backyard. She couldn't see anything, but she wasn't going to turn on the light.
She went back upstairs, went into her room, and turned the lights off so as not to be seen. Carie then locked her bedroom door for extra safety. She changed out of her pants which were soggy from sitting in the shower. She put on her pajamas and took a seat on the couch that was under a window. She looked over to her neighbor's house, Ashton's house, She sighed he was right. She got up not wanting to feel like a creep for looking out her window into his bedroom window. She curled into bed and rubbed her tired eyes, they burned from crying. She quickly fell asleep, as her eyes were too heavy to stay open.
