I walk down the slippery, muddy trail. It is still dark, I look up to the sky and see the stars shine like a thousand lanterns. The moon is full, shining like a spotlight on the skyscraper trees.
I come to a fork in the road. I take out the old compass, it points to the path less traveled by. I hear another throat-ripping scream. I continue in the direction of the dense path - with each step I feel braver.
The wind blows threw the trees, letting each leaf travel in the same direction- it reminds me of the path I was forced to follow. The path of a monster hunter. The icy cold wind reminds me of the love-hate relationship I shared with my parents. I look down at the frail old compass in my hand, just a few more miles and I will arrive at the next town, where I will finally exact revenge on the monster that killed my father in cold blood.
As I open the door to go into the saloon the bright light and loud music hits me like a punch in the face. The sound of people talking and laughing is so hard the music can barely be heard.
I sit down on the old black wooden chair at the bar. The smell of beer, peanuts and women's perfume cover the saloon like a blanket. The woman next to men's perfume smells like my mother's - it takes me back to when I was still young, when my mother and I would sit on the soft yellow-green couch waiting for my father to come home. She would always braid my hair, her long, soft hands were so gentle, just like her soul.
The one thing I have learned from my father, was that the path that always looks worth exploring is unknown, with every corner a new obstacle to overcome. Those were the last words my father spoke before he closed his bloody hand in mine, took his last breath and closed his eyes.
Let me know what you think.
The rest of chapter 1 is coming soon.
